A Dutch word, meaning a peg made of a particular kind of wood. On a quick trip through Am- sterdam I learned many inter esting things. There are 65 miles of canals and 460 bridges, twice as many as in Venice Two cars per week fall into ca nals because they park along the sides. Flags on the flagpoles in every square are usually at half- mast, indicating there has been another fatal auto accident that day. It is rare for married women to work, except in their own iomes, which are kept immacu lately clean. I'm sure they are the cleanest in the world. The stairs in all but the newest buildings are almost like lad ders so steep and narrow that all the houses have a large hook on the uppermost beam protrud ing from the roof. This way fur niture and large packages can be hoisted through windows. Need for Children I heard a great deal about the housing shortage but also heard that the queen gives each child of a "salaried" papa 41 guilders 'quarterly,- approximately $60 a year. For each additional child he gets a larger amount. One actor has nine children. Former Rommel Korp Members Honor Dead Tobruk, Libya (U.R) Four hundred former members of Field Marshal Erwin Rommel's Afrika Korps gathered in this dusty port Sunday to honor the memory of Germans who fell in the North Agrican campaigns of World War II. It was the first such ceremony since the end of the war. The 400, located through various vet erans organizations in West Ger many, were flown here at West German government expense with their wives and children. Indianapolis, Ind. U.R) Five students were injured Saturday when- an explosion, believed caused by a defective water heater, demolished the Sigma Chi fraternity house on the But ler University campus. probably doesn't work all the Dogs are taxed according to the amount of rent the owner pays. The children of the Scapino Ballet, which I briefly attended, had the youngest of the royal princesses in the audience. She gets no special attention and curtsies are out of order with the royal family. I actually saw or I would not have believed it as a sidewalk cafe on Rembrandt Square which was lighted by sunlamps so the clientele could get a sun tan while ' being kept warm! They all looked mighty weird sitting there wearing pitch black sun glasses in the evening. Familiar Names A boat ride of 45 minutes through the canals are fun. Our guide said: "On the right is a houseboat. They pay no taxes." As we passed it we read the sign on the side, "Bible Club Move ment Philadelphia." A little further on I noticed a three-story building about 16 feet wide with these words over the door, "Hotel New York." "On the left," our guide went on, "is the smallest house in Amsterdam. I imagine in the world." It is two stories, has three rooms, only 32 inches wide, the width of an ordinary door. I saw a fat man sitting in the upstairs window. The most wonderful thing I heard in Amsterdam, or any country for that matter, was that children and young people un der 21 are not allowed to sit on a street car or public convey ance if an adult, man or woman, is standing. uotes From the News By UNITED PRESS Baltimore, Md.
