Supreme Court Rejects Suit by Clackamas County Washington flJ.R) The Su preme court rejected today a suit by Clackamas county, Ore., which sought to have 472,000 acres of western Oregon timber land administered by the Inte rior department. The court gave no reason for its action. Clackamas claimed that Con gress had no right in 1954 to pass a law transferring adminis tration of the land from the In terior department to the Depart ment of Agriculture. The county argued that the land was "revised" from a grant to the Oregon and Cali fornia railroad and belongs to Oregon, not the. federal govern ment. As such, it contended, -the Interior department should hold the land in trust or receivership for the state. It also said that transfer of the land to the De partment of Agriculture will re duce the county's income from the property. The Supreme court In a 7-2 decision last April threw out Clackamas' suit on grounds that the case was moot because of the 1954 law. The U.S. Court of Appeals last July dismissed a companion suit challenging . the constitu tionality of the law. It was from this decision that Clackamas filed its latest appeal in the high court, an appeal that the court rejected today. The Greeks had a word for it: "phthisis." It's been called con sumption, the wasting disease, the white plague. Today it's called tuberculosis. w ok MARKET 1202 North Riverside i OPEN EVERY NIGHT 'TIL MinNIIflUT .3 ToniterP!T FROM THE SCALDING, TRUTHFUL PAGES 4 OF A GREAT NOVEL! 1 K HI-'-WIRE fcto John Katy VI tan PORTLAND LIVESTOCK Portland (UP) Cattle 3000.
