Safety D raves An intensive membership drive is being undertaken by the Med ford Safety council, according to R. L. (Bud; Palmer, president. Both business firms and indi viduals are being asked to join in a safety program for the en tire county in a concerted at tempt to cut down the number of accidents, he said. "Partners in Safety" is the slogan for the drive. Safely., Program The council at the same time is launching a safety program to put the spotlight on safety in TwoMenOisappear; Police Investigate Dallas; !U.R) Deputy Sher iff R. B. LeFors said Saturday an investigation was under way into the disappearance of two men here. LeFors said one of the men he identified as Tony Lee Chesshir of Fabins, Tex., was authorized to drive a car to a used car dealer here. Chesshir arrived Nov. 1 accompanied by an unidentified man and Ches shir registered at a hotel before the pair left, the deputy said. Their luggage was left in the room. The unidentified man return ed the next day and told the clerk, "Boy, they sure took me in Portland," LeFors said. Trie man then left and neither has been seen since although their luggage remains at the hotel LeFors said a gasoline credit card might be a clue to the sec ond man's identity and that he was checking with authorities in Texas and Oklahoma. Officers said a woman ' re ported that a passing car had what appeared to be a body sticking out of the trunk. She gave them the license number, ber. ' Officers checked. There will be five cash awards in a weekly safety slogan of 20 or fewer words. 'Mystery Jaywalker' A "mystery jaywalker" will be on the streets to call atten tion to the dangers of jaywalk ing. If any resident identifies the "mystery jaywalker" he will re ceive a cash award on the spot. The procedure to be followed is to ask the jaywalker: "Are you the 'mystery paywalker'?" Pal mer said the question, asked of other jaywalkers, will serve to call attention to the violation. A telephone campaign through out the county,-urging residents to observe practices during the Golf Course May Close Because Negroes Play Asheboro, N.C. U.R) Of ficials of the Asheboro munici pal golf course, where Negroes took quick advantage of the U.S Supreme Court ruling allowing them to play alongside whites, have indicated the course would close as a result. Eight Negroes played Wednes day and two more Thursday on the Asheboro course. y Edward D. Cranford, chair man of the commission which runs the course, said "the course will definitely close unless something is done about it," he added: "There is nothing we can do about it." At least 20 white players have resigned- their member ships in the club since Negroes began using the course. Cranford said others have in dicated they will quit the club. The course is self-supporting from greens fees, memberships and concessions. Commission spokesmen indi cated the loss of memberships may result in the course being abandoned. The city does not contribute to its support. holiday season, will be started soon, Palmer said. The Medford Safety council is a member of the National Safety council, and has available the resources of the national body for a year-around safety pro gram, the president stated. A number of packages, rang ing in price from $5 up, and con taining a variety of foods, cloth ing, books and other textiles and useful . articles, are available through care. , The northwest CARE office is Confribulions Needed For Malheur Project Ontario (U.R) Army Engi neers said today that farmers and property owners would have to contribute a total of $123,000 in rights of way and land clear ing to effect a flood control proj ect on the Malheur river and Willow creek. The local contributions would not be in the form of cash but in value, engineers said. Howard Peterson, spokesman in the Frederick & Nelson De partment store building, Seattle 11, Wash. for the Walla Walla office of the ; Corps of Engineers, said the fed- ! eral cost of the Malheur project would be 5218,000 and the local participation worth S50,000. On the Willow creek project, the federal cost would be $229,000 and $73,000 worth of local help. The plan involves straighten ing and altering the Willow creek channel for 20 miles south from Brogan to the confluence with the Malheur at Vale. Dr. Gordon C. Edwards, act ing state health officer, said no more mass public clinics will ! be held in Oregon this year but that arrangements would be made in local areas regarding vaccinations to be given by health departments. He said none of the new vaccine would, be available 'for several days" but that there was enough on hand at present. Eligible are children under 15 and pregnant women. Boy Scouts Squadron 14 Squadron 14, Boy Scouts of America, will hold its annual canned foods drive Monday night, Nov. 21. Squadron mem bers may be identified by the Boy Scout uniform or necker chief. Food collected in this drive will be distributed to needy resi dents by one or more of the local churches.
