The system made up of a dis carded switchboard and three telephones was installed by Il linois Bell Telephone company employees at the Illinois Chil dren's Hospital-School here. Each of the three telephones interconnects with the other two and with the switchboard so that a telephone conversation can be carried on. The "operator" ' can ring the other two telephones in another room from the switchboard when asked to by one of the youthful "subscribers." "We hope this experiment will help motivate the children to speak more adequately, thus aim ing toward improved speech," said Superintendent Richard Eddy of the Hospital-School. Selective Breeding Of Super-Nutritional Veqetables Possible By DELOS SMITH United Press Science Editor New York (U.R) For the same reason that your eyes are blue or brown, the oats in your oatmeal are high or low in their content of protein and vitamins. That has been proven at Iowa State College in Ames, la. Cou pled with recent experiments elsewhere, it means there now is a theoretical possibility of selec tively breeding super-nutritional vegetables. It's done regularly with ani mals. Selective breeding pro duces cows that give more milk, steers that are heavier with lean, juicy meat, hens that lay more eggs. Oats Like Ancestors Dr. K. J. Frey of Iowa and his associates demonstrated that oats are rich or poor in protein and vitamins because of the kind of ancestors they have. Oats and other vegetables pass their characteristics along to their children the way animals do through the genes in the chro mosomes of the germ cells. But it is a comparatively new discov ery that the level of protein and vitamins is determined by genes in some vegetables. There are two kinds of these genes, one kind which make for low protein content, another kind which makes for high protein content. Frey's very important contribution was the demonstra tion that the genes making for high content can be "dominant", at least in oats. Offspring Like Parent Thus, by selecting one oat par ent with the high protein level gene, oat breeders may produce oat offspring which are like the high protein parent. The present draw-back is that he was unable to determine whether the high protein gene was going to be dominant or recessive "until the cross had been tried." But regarding the vitamins, riboflavin and niacin, his experi ments indicated that the genes controlling their level in oats are dominant. He considered this "one of the most interesting and practical aspects" of his report to a technical journal of the Glass Blocks in Homes Bounce Sound Cleveland, O. The strip teaser showed her art to some 750 men students at the 9th annual Engineers Bust in the Home Economics building on the campus. , The act was part of several events sponsored by various segments of the School of En gineering. The event which shocked school officials was staged by the electrical engi neering students The engineering student council oversees the annual event. Dean of.
