He will meet the task force in New Zealand, Dec. 14. ine Gallons of Wafer May Eliminate Jet Crash Hazard Moffett Field, Calif. (U.R) One of jet aviation's greatest crash hazards fire may be eliminated by just nine gallons of water, the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics has reported. The NCAC announced results of experiments conducted at its Lewis Laboratory at Cleveland, O., during the triennial inspec tion of its Ames Aeronautical Laboratory here. In its study of jet crashes, the NACA scientists discovered that the jet engine is the worst fire hazard in a crash since It oper ates at high temperatures and is located near the plane's fuel tanks. Slow motion moving pictures jhowed that when the fuel tanks were ripped open in a crash, great quantities of the spattering fuel were sucked into the still operating jet engines. The NCAC said the jet engines continued to operate after a crash because they have no propellers to strike the earth and bring the engine to a halt. Water Sprayed A "crash switch" that cuts off the flow of fuel to the engines on impact, thus extinguishing the combustor flame in the engine, failed to eliminate fires because parts of the jet engine remained hot enough to ignite the fuel sucked through.' To solve this problem, the NCAC scientists installed tanks on the jet engines holding about nine gallons of water under pressure. On the crash impact the water is sprayed over the hot metal surfaces. The water spray not only cools the hot metal, but also produces clouds of steam that effectively seal off the oxygen needed for an explosion or fire. In six test crashes involving heavy damage to the airplanes, the planes equipped with the water sprays did not catch fire. Similar trials of aricraft without the sprays produced large fires. NACA experts report the pres ent apparatus is heavy, but they expect to be able to cut down its weight. They said they believe the equipment will soon be suit able for installation on operation al aircraft. New Seats Meantime, other NACA scien tists, working on the theory that little is gained by preventing fire if all the occupants of the aircraft are killed in the crash, have developed a new seat for air transports. The new seats, the NACA said, haved proved capable of cutting death-dealing deceleration forces, the sudden, slamming stop, by more than two-thirds. The shock-absorber seats are padded with air-inflated rubber. The base of the seat is securely connected to the deck of the plane. But the base is joined to the seat only by a strong rubber elastic exerting 1,000 pounds of force. This elastic connection allows the seat to flex in any direction, thus taking up a large portion of the shock of the crash while pre venting the seat from tearing from the deck and hurtling the passenger through the cabin like a missile. (U.R) Harold Fleisher was fined double for making an illegal left turn at an intersection for which he had recommended a neon no-left-turn signal. Fleisher handed the judge a newspaper clipping iden tifying him as the winner of an idea payoff for the neon light suggestion. Judge John Corrigan imposed the double fine, saying, "You should have known better." Rich, Colorful Section Of Mexico Flood Scoured Washington Northeastern Mexico, scoured by floods spilled from three successive hurri canes, is a region rich in com merce, antique culture and scenery. The hurricanes struck hard at Tampico, the sprawling oil town that sits only 11 feet above the Panuco river. The city's almost complete inundation devastated a Mexican port ranked second only to southerly Veracruz. Clinging to many Mexican folkways, modern Tampico nev ertheless exuded the characteris tics of any flourishing oil center. Wealth-laden petroleum refiner ies and storage tanks stood as symbols of its prosperity. Once Festive City .- Transportation networks brought outsiders to Tampico seeking the mild winter climate Corvallis Housing ! Lack Causes Concern Corvallis UR) Oregon Stale College and city officials ex pressed concern today about an expected housing shortage here. At a meeting this week it was brought out that more than 1000 students are living off the campus in Corvallis. It was indi cated that number is being ade quately handled at present. How ever, a minimum increase of 10 per cent in enrollment is expect ed at Oregon State next year and for every 500 new students an additional 40 staff members are needed. There is no indication of any large-scale housing planned here and a survey of real estate deal ers has indicated there are vir tually no unrented houses. Dr. A. L. Strand, president of Oregon State, said final plans are being drawn for a new unit on the men's dormitory and that an additional women's unit prob ably can be financed. They would house about 310 men and 100 women but cannot be ready for almost two years. THREE DEAD IN FIRE AT SEA Seamen burned in a fire aboard the Navy radar picket ship Searcher 125-miles off New York are lowered from rescue cutter Ingham to be put aboard a Coast Guard plane for flight to the main land. The fire took the lives of three men and injured two others. So vital was the work of the Searcher that another picket boat was dispatched to take over her station. During the International Geo physical Year, 1957-58, twelve nations, including the United States and Soviet Russia, will inhabit the Antarctic for a short period to study the various phe nomena of the southernmost sec tor of the earth. Firemen Issue Call For Additional Toys City firemen issued a call to day for more broken toys. They said that they have "nothing we can work on now" in their annual Christmas toy repair and repainting project. About one-fourth the toys needed to be fixed for needy youngsters nave been received, firemen added. Persons with discarded but repairable toys are asked to bring' them to the main fire sta tion at Third and Front sts. Prin cipal needs are tricycles, wagons and small cars and trucks. HURRY! HURRY! Hurricane Janet, which swell ed other recent floodings of the area, screamed into the Yucatan Peninsula in late September, striking hard against Chetumal, capital of Quintana Roo. The rain-laden blasts pierced an area of Mexico renowned for its an cient Maya civilization and mys terious ruined cities secreted in dark forests. Productive Area The peninsula, embracing the states of Campeche and Yucatan and the Territory of Quintana Roo, is flat and open to sweeping winds, except for some hills to the south. The almost constant sea breeze ordinarily powers hundreds of windmills on the landscape. Yucatan leans heavily for sup port on henequen, the leaf fiber of an agave plant. It sprang to importance after the invention of the reaper and binder opened a market for strong, cheap twine to fasten sheaves of grain. In Campeche and Quintana Roo sapota trees provide chicle, a basic ingredient of chewing gum. Tropical rain forests hold valuable hardwoods, mahogany, rosewood and ebony. Mexico supplies about half of the ma hogany used in the United States.
