Smylie would make a "splendid choice'' for keynote speaker at the 1956 Republican convention in San Francisco. In a press conference at the Idaho statehouse, the California chief executive said he would be "heartily in favor of Gov. Smylie as keynote speaker" and added he thought it would be "highly in good taste" if the speaker came from the West. Knight Not Candidate The California governor, who has been mentioned as a presi dential possibility if President Eisenhower decides not to run in '56, parried reporters' ques tions about White House poten tial among Republicans. "I am not a candidate for President," he said flatly. Asked about the possibility of Chief Justice Earl Warren throwing his hat in the ring, Knight said, "He (Warren) has said repeatedly he could not. I served for eight years under Mr. Warren as lieutenant governor and I learned he is not given to casual and offhand statements." "Of course one cannot say what would happen if a tre mendous draft were levied against the former governor and now Chief Justice," Knight added. Vending Machine Hikes Egg Sales Dead line Sunday Classified is at noon Saturday; 10 a m. Monday for Monday; other days 5:30 previous day. Colon, Mich. U.R5 A rural cousin to the automatic vending machine is paying off in in creased egg sales for a gadget wise farmer near here. Robert Mowry took several lengths of tubing, a small elec tric drill motor, a conveyor belt and other spare parts and pieced together a contraption that en ables egg customers to serve themselves from a drive-in dispenser. Neuberger Claims Wild Charges Made Portland (U.R) Sen. Rich ard L. Neuberger yesterday said Rep. Clare Hoffman (R-Mich.) was making "wild charges" of politics in connection with the current Congressional hearing into federal timber policies. Sen. Neuberger, referring to a statement by Rep. Hoffman in Washington. D. C., last week, said the Michigan Republican "should try and document his wild charges" that the hearings were motivated by a desire to discredit the Eisenhower admin istration. Neuberger declared that many millowners had predicted shut downs and labor leaders unem ployment unless more federal timber' were made available, and that Indian families had com plained timber held in trust for them was being sold too low. The Oregon Democrat de clared the hearings were an "im partial survey" and not a "pre conceivd scheme to discredit the Eisenhower administration." A motorist approaching the Mowry farm first sees a sign reading, "In One Minute." The next sign says "You Can Buy." a third sign proclaims the prod uct, "Eggs!" The prospective egg-buyer then merely pulls up to a tube protruding from the basement of the Mowry home, lifts up the cellophane flap on the tube and out pops a dozen fresh eggs. On the principle of the honor sys tem, a tray containing small change offers a customer change for a bill. When the egg carton is re moved from the dispenser, the change in weight starts the small drill motor in the Mowry base ment. This starts a conveyor belt in motion, which carries another dozen eggs up to the mouth of the tube. A heating element operating on a thermostat heals the eggs on chilly nights and the Mowrys never put more than one day's supply of eggs on the conveyor at one time. This insures cus tomers always getting farm-fresh eggs for their money. Parts of the contraption cost Mowry $25. And the customer nedrvt worry. Since gambling is illegal in Michigan, the machine always pays off. THEY GOT HIM St. Paul,. Minn. (U.R) Guy L. Trafton's name was drawn for jury duty in district court here twice in less than a month. He had been eligible for jury duty 21 years previously without ever being called. In each case, his name was the 146th drawn for the jury panel from a total of 225. The revolutionary aircraft was developed by scientists at the committee's Langley laboratory in Virginia as part of the NACA's concerted drive to cut down on the area needed for air ports and make landings and takeoffs safer. Development of the craft was announced at the triennial in spection of the committee's Ames Aeronautical laboratory here. Wing Turns on Edge This new type of plane looks like the conventional airliner ex cept that the wing turns on edge, tipping the engines back so that the propellers or jets thrust their force straight down for takeoffs and landings. When the plane is airborne, the wings and engines rotate back to the normal position for conventional flight. The NACA did not reveal the manner by which the wings are turned. "This principle permits hov ering and landings and takeoffs in small space, plus reasonably high performance in cruising flight," the NACA announce ment said. The announcement gave no clue as to when the unusual air plane might be perfected for ac tual full-scale flight. The NACA is also continuing research on another type of ver tically rising plane. In this type the thrust of the propellers would be deflected downward by turning the vanes that look like a large Venetian blind. The objective is a system which can produce vertical lift while the airplane remains near ly horizontal but which can be retracted to provide a clean wing for normal flight. Fuselage Nosed Upward A scale model transport using this system . has been able to hover, takeoff and land while the fuselage was nosed upward a maximum of 15 degrees from the horizontal. A third system, one the NACA said offers "much promise" to jets, provides a smooth air flow over the wings at slow speed to retain effective lift. Tests on high speed military fighter planes show it can reduce land ing and takeoff speeds by a "sig nificant amount." Using the jet engine for an air pump, the so-called boundary control system, blows air through the wings of the plane to speed up and smooth out the disturbed air flows over the wing, thus im proving the lift effectiveness of simple wing flaps. Gold Kill Group Gets Chest X-Rays Thirty-two residents of the Gold Hill area came to Sacred Heart hospital Monday evening for a special Gold Hill x-ray pro ject. This was the first of the outlying communities to partici pate in the program, to locate an estimated 100 unknown cases of tuberculosis in the county. Other chest conditions are also revealed through the x-ray. The first of the Gold Hill con tingent arrived at the hospital at 7:20 p.m. and the last film was taken before 8 p.m. leaving plenty of time for other evening activities, according to those in charge. Mrs. Paul Molloy was in charge of the project and serv ed coffee following the x-rays. The x-ray unit will be open to the public at Sacred Heart hos pital tomorrow from 2 to 5 p.m. The hospital auxiliary provides volunteer help for this program.
