Although she herself suffers from a chronic heart condition dating back to her girlhood, Mamie Eisenhower was a pillar of strength and inspiration when the Chief Executive was in the hospital. Almost entirely on her own she took over the monumental task of directing the replies to the more than 100,000 letters and "get well" messages which poured into Fitzsimmons Army Hospital at Denver. The first lady put in amazing ly long hours working on corre spondence in her hospital room. Because she must have a certain amount of rest, much of the mail was dictated and signed as she sat in bed. She preferred to work most of the mornings at the hospital in a dressing robe, but she gave this up when she went out on the sun terrace beside her hus band's bed one day and dis covered cameras peering up at the terrace from the ground below. mountainous mail, Mrs. Eisen hower was the leading source of cheer around the President's hos pital suite. She saw to it that his meals were served as attrac tively as his diet and hospital surroundings permitted. He's taking five years to make four TV films. Capra, an Oscar winner and notable Aline Mosby film creator, vanished from the "Hollywood scene after finishing "Here Comes the Groom," a Bing Cros by comedy that was not a smash success. Friends say he felt the results were not up to his earlier pictures such as "It Happened One Night" and "Lost Horizon." His absence has been puzzling to Hollywood, and today the di rector told about his until-now secret project, of shooting four one-hour TV programs in color since 1951. The American Telephone and Telegraph Co. asked the film maker to direct the TV movies. He calls them "experimental an entirely new form for televi sion." The TV shows are "a combina tion of science and entertain ment," and have the famed Capra comedy touch. "For example, the first one deals with the sun," he ex plained. "What the sun means, and so forth." The other Capra TV programs feature cosmic rays, blood and the weather. Fifty per cent of them are done in cartoons form by United Producers of America, creators of "Gerald McBoing Boing" and "Mr. McGoo." Only one Capra show On the Sun has been completed. The other three will be ready for showing on some as yet unse lected network "towards the end of next year." The first show stars Eddie Albert, Dr. Frank Baxter of TV's Shakespeare class and the late Lionel Barrymore. "I wanted to do these because I've always been interested in science," Capra said.
