FOURTEEN MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE Brazil Building Coffee Surplus; Price To Stay Up Rio De Janeiro !U.R) Brazil is building up a large surplus of coffee this year, but housewives probably will go on paying as c much as ever. Ordinarily the price of coffee might be expected to drop under the conditions shaping up in cof fee production centers, but Bra zil" price-stabilization policy stands in the way of such a de cline. The new Brazilian coffee mar ket year begins July 1. At that time, stocks on hand are ex pected to exceed 6,000,000 sacks, the equivalent of about four months' consumption in the Uni ted States. The new crop that will begin pouring into commercial pipe lines July 1 is figured to provide more than 16,000,000 sacks for export. This is about 3,000,000 more than the current frost blighted crop provided. Adding the July 1 stock to the new crop, the total is around 22,000,000 sacks, which is a lot of coffee, even in Brazil. Stockpiling Too much, in fact, and the cof-fee-grow,ing nations have worked up a plan to keep part of their coffee off the market to prevent a price collapse. A drop in prices, the producers claim, would not really sell any more coffee. What is needed, they say, is a slam-bang sales promotion campaign in the Uni ted States and Europe and even an expansion of sales to lion Curtain countries. Meanwhile, the surplus would be taken care of by government stockpiling. Finance Minister Jose Maria Whitaker, a 77-year-old banker, has announced that Brazil will form a reserve with 3,000,000 sacks it has bought up from the current crop under the price-support program. But at the same time he made it clear he wants Brazil's coffee interests to get out and sell what e remains of the crop. He hopes to avoid any , further stockpiling, which puts too much of a strain on Brazil's inflation - backed treasury. Two Rescued in Collision of Boats Portland (U.R) Two Corps of Engineers employees were rescued from the Columbia river last night when the survey boat Bonneville collided with a small Japanese freighter near Puget Island between Longview and Cathlamet, Wash. The Bonneville sank in between 45 and 65 feet of water. Lee E. Sams, captain of the survey boat, and Harry D. Nuf fer, and surveyor, were able to climb aboard a light aluminum skiff after the collision and were picked up y the freighter and taken to Longview. Engineers said the 48-foot dies el powered survey boat was in process of turning when it col lided with the Banshu Maru No. 38. The freighter suffered only minor damages. Col. Jackson Graham, Port land district engineer, said he had appointed a board to investi gate the sinking. Other engin eers' vessels were at the scene today to determine whether the Bonneville could be raised. Russian Clergyman Denied Entry To US Washington (U.R) The State Department announced today that it has cancelled a visa for Archbishop Boris of Russia to visit the United States. The State Department said the archbishop's planned visit to this country was called off because Russia insisted that he be free, ' while in the United States, to minister to American citizens who are members of the Russian Orthodox church. The department said this would be an "unacceptable func tion." A spokesman explained that such an arrangement would give the Russian churchman rights that Russia has refused to give to an American Catholic priest who is planning to go to Moscow. The action came just 11 days after the United States and Rus sia had agreed to exchange churchmen. AERIAL EXCHANGE New Delhi (U.R) The gov ernment of India and Indone sia have agreed to interchange, on a reciprocal basis, officers of the Indian, and Indonesian Air Forces. The two governments have also decided on a courier service between India and Indo nesia to be run on a reciprocal basis. The courier service is to train Indonesian and Indian pi lots on flights outside their re spective countries. Elevators in New York's Rock efeller Center have carried more than a billion passengers since they were installed 23 years ago. Pat Hillings (R-Calif.) member of the House Judiciary Commit tee, planned today to introduce a bill in Congress calling for the death penalty for the killing of anyone aboard interstate air craft. Hillings disclosed his planned action yesterday. He said it was prompted by the Denver an nouncement that John Graham faced only a maximum of 10 years in prison and a S10.000 fine under federal statutes, al though he can be charged with murder under state laws. The priest wrapped her in the robes and decreed that from that mo ment on she would never again be seen by human eyes. Some people believe that the only reason the priests will not exhibit the object Js because there is nothing at all to be seen and that the citizens are being duped into worshipping nothing.
