By MISS HELEN WEBSTER Medford Librarian If not each of the year's 365 days, then at least each of its 52 weeks seems to have been ap propriated by one group or an other for promotion of its own particular cause. Because your public library is interested in all the people and all the activities of the community, it welcomes these calendared reminders of your special concerns as its own good opportunity to participate in your observance of United Nations day, National Bible week, American Education week, Children's Book week, or other such occasion. Now in November it has be come your library's turn to hold the spotlight during such a pe riod. Actually an entire year, 1955, was designated by the Gen eral Federation of Women's clubs as "Know Your Library" year, culminating with the month of November. Urge Library Visits Club women all over the United States are urged to visit their public libraries during this month to get to know them bet ter and to help them grow. The overall program is under the di rection of Mrs. Robert F. Her rig, Libby, Mont., chairman of the GFWC libraries division. In an attempt to learn more of public libraries, their resources, their problems, their shortcom ings, the League of Women Vot ers has prepared a questionnaire by which each chapter can de termine how its own local li- Some Long for the "Good Old Days". . . The American Asso ciation of University Women has adopted promotion of the devel opment of library services as a current issue in its national leg islative program for 1955-1957. Beta Sigma Phi sorority has made the acquaintance with and use of the public library an im portant part in its program for the year; and the Alpha Rho chapter recently held a meeting in the librarian's office as a part of that program. Debt to Women's Groups All of this seems fitting and proper since it was women's .clubs in the first place which created and fostered the little subscription libraries that later become the responsibility of the entire community. Libraries rec ognize their great debt to these organizations and are happy to contribute, just as far as their resources permit, to club proj ects and programs. We have on display in the li brary this month some of the tools of our trade, books that may tell you more about public library administration than you care to know, but are certainly worth scanning if you are inter ested in libraries, what they can be, and what they should do. You are welcome to borrow any of them. Periinent Facts Told Some pertinent facts about the Medford Public library are these: Its headquarters are, of course, in Medford on West Main st. at Oakdale, opposite the courthouse. It may be news to you, however, that the Medford Public library, serving county residents chiefly through 10 branches, or stations, at Jack sonville, Phoenix, Talent, Eagle Point, Central Point, Butte Falls, Shady Cove, Rogue River, Winn er and Gold Hill. Any resident of Jackson coun ty may borrow any book from the library's collection of over 30,000 volumes from headquar ters, through one of the branch es, or by direct mail service if there is not a branch in his vi cinity. The most practical means of making county coverage truly complete would be by use of a bookmobile, a traveling library which would carry a selection of about 2,500 books to the most remote corners of the area. Ore gon has fallen behind her neigh boring states, California and Washington, in the use of this means of library extension. Library Staff Your library has a staff of eight full-time and four part time assistants, all serving at li brary headquarters. Each of the branches has a part-time custo dian, some of whom serve entire ly on a voluntary basis. If your taxes are $100 yearly, your library costs you 35 cents, or the cost of one paper-covered drug store novel, for all of the services it provides you. If you pay $1,000 in taxes, your library costs you $3.50, the current price of almost any novel or any mag azine subscription. We hope you find it worth the cost. Added Services? How much would it be worth to you to bring your library up to American Library association standards? To have the bookmo bile stop at your' community? To have the services of a profes sional reference librarian? To have so many new books that you would not have to wait for reserve lists to be filled? Would you like to have films and rec ords available for loan? Your library staff is not only willing, but eager, to provide additional books and services if you say the word. It's your library, and it will give you what you ask for, to the farthest extent of its resources. Why not become one of the li brary's more than 10,000 bor rowers this month, and find out just what your public library has to offer you? i-!
