U.R) The family of Burton W. Abbott dis closed today it has already cost them S15.000 to defend him from charges he murdered 14-year-old Stephanie Bryan. Abbott's mother, Mrs. Elsie Abbott, said five members of the family have used up all their savings and gone into debt in their attempts to save the 27-year-old defendant from im prisonment or execution. She said it may take another S15.000. Investigators Expensive "When the taking of testi mony starts," she said, "we'll need investigators plenty of them. But they cost S250 a day. How are we going to hire them at that price? We're working people." The trial was in recess today because of the Veterans Day holiday. It will resume next Monday. When court adjourned yester day, five men and six women were in the jury box. The de fense had used seven challenges to the state's five. The first panel of 56 persons was ex hausted and a new panel of 65 was ordered to report on Mon day. An indication that at least one side may be near approval of the jury came when District Attor ney J. Frank Coakley passed up his peremptory challenge three times in a row, forcing the de fense to use its own challenges to keep the jury selection going. Abbott Disappointed When both sides pass the chal lenge consecutively, a final jury to try Abbott for the kidnap- murder of the Berkeley school thing. They gave Abbott a set of snapshots of the child, which he studied carefully, a smile breaking across his face from time to time.
