o TEf MECfORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE Friday, November II, 1953 Talent Schools Add New Equipment Talent Two new pieces of equipment a movie projector and a slide projector have been added to Talent Elementary school's audio-visual education program. Both the 16 millimeter movie projector and the 35 millimeter slide projector are mounted semi-permanently in an extra classroom which is used entire ly for visual education. Other equipment is moved from room to room when needed. Teachers schedule visual classes in the special room weekly and it serves 16 teachers and classes. Instructors deter mine the length of time needed so the film may be introduced, shown and discussed before pupils are tested for information retained. Talent Elementary school is a member of the Jackson Coun ty Schools Film pool, which was started several years ago to ob tain and keep a central film library of educational motion pictures of all subjects. Member ship fees are used to repair film and add new films to the library each year. The first organization in this country called the "Fighting Irish" was New York's 69th regiment, National Guard. It is now officially known as the 165th Infantry, NYNG. I prefer to call the 69th "new Y one s Own." The 69th fought at Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, G e 1 1 y s burg and many other places during the War Between the States. In World War I it battled gallantly on the Marne and at St. Mihiel. Its members originally were practically all of Irish birth or descent. The an swer is that the young woman's name was Inza. Last name was Burrage. She was a brunette. Over There In. England they have a type of turf bet called a "forecast." Calls for selection of horses that will finish first and second. In that respect it is the .same as the quinella. However the payoff is different. You get "multiplied odds." If the winner paid 4 to 1 and the second horse 15 to 1, those picking them in the "fore cast" get 60 to 1. Passing By L e 1 a n d Stanford "Larry" MacPhail. Distinguished sports world figure. Possessor of one of this country's most brilliant business minds. Larry rescued the Brooklyn Dodgers from bankruptcy and started them on the high road to financial suc cess. He then did much to aid the progress of the New York Yankees. Sold out his interests in the latter club for several million dollars. Now he is one of the world's leaders among breeders of thoroughbreds. At the Saratoga sales last year, MacPhail's Glenangus farms sold over $300,000 worth of yearlings. Asides Am asked how much more oil Texas produces than Califor nia. Answer is four times as much. . . . Not a reference to Ethel Merman having been ear ly in her career a stenographer by day, a night club singer after dark. Very interesting. How ever, I knew a girl who was a registered pharmacist by day and night club dancer at night. Increase Proposed In Yater Rates For Central Point Central Point The Medford water commission this week pre sented a proposed new contract to Central Point increasing the cost of water to the city. The council discussed the new sched ule earlier this week. The new contract indicates an increase in cost of water of about 8.9 per cent based on figures compiled by the Medford water commission for the period Oct. 1, 1954, to Nov. 1, 1955. The present contract expires Nov. 23. Connection Rates Under the proposed schedule, estimated cost for a three-quarter-inch connection would be $1.75, compared to $1 under the present schedule. Other in creases would be from $1.20 to $2.25 for an inch connection; from $1.40 to $2.85 for IVi-inch connection; from $1.80 to $3.70 for a two-inch connection; and from $3.20 to $6.90 for a three inch connection. The council also discussed an additional charge of $1.50 for Central Point connects to pay off bonded indebtedness against the water system. ' The new rates compared to present metered commercial rates in Medford are a little low er. . Rates in Medford now are S1.65, i S2.25, $2.85, S3.70 and $7.50 for connections from three-quarter-inch to three inch. Additional Schedule An additional schedule for water in excess of the minimum of 5,000 gallons also was pro posed by the water commission. The contract proposed calls for the first 40,000 at 25 cents per thousand, next 300,000 gallons at 15 cents per thousand, the next 1,660,000 gallons at seven cents, and all over 2,000,000 gal lons at 6V2 cents. The increase is estimated to Bee Management Discussion Set Bee management and winter care will be discussed at a meet ing of the Rogue River Valley Beekeepers association at 8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 17, at the Jack son county courthouse auditor- Some commercial beekeepers in the county lost as many as 50 per cent of their bee colonies last winter because of cold weather and lack of nectar bear ing crops, according to W. B. Tucker, chief county agent. About 5,000 colonies of bees are regularly kept in the county, Tucker said, but the number is less this year due to the quality of hives that died last winter from starvation. All beekeepers and prospect ive beekeepers are invited to the meeting next Thursday, Tucker said. Rogue River FHA Announces Theme , Rogue River The Rogue River Future Homemakers of America will have as their theme next week "Towards New Hori zons" and several events have been scheduled. Pack Day will be held Mon day, and the FHA girls skating party will be held Tuesday. Wed nesday the girls will present an assembly skit, and Thursday the noon candy sale will be held on the high school lawn. The levi hop will be held Friday. Ex-GI Turncoat Tells Portland Audience of Chinese Kindness o Portland (U.R) One of three ex-GI turncoats freed Tuesday from a military stockade at San Francisco last night blamed the "extraordinary kindness" of the Chinese Reds for the trio's de ciding to remain in China after their capture during the Korean war. William Cowart, 22, Dalton, Ga., spoke at a self-styled "Cru sade against Communism" meet ing sponsored by Portland evangelist Dr. Thomas A. Wyatt. He was the only one of the three to speak. With Cowart on the stage were Otho Bell, 24, Httlsboro, Miss., and Lewie Griggs, 22, Jackson ville, Tex., who were released from a stockade this week after the TJ. S. Supreme Court ruled the Army could not try civilians for offenses committed in the service. Torture Not Always Involved Cowart said he was "specifi cally anxious" . for people to realize the brainwashing meth ods used by their Chinese cap tors did not always involve physical torture. He cited the extraordinary kindness used , by the Communists to break down any resistance. Cowart said the trio would remain in Portland through Sun day, and would appear at three more meetings in the crusade. More than 700 persons flocked to the Wings of Healing sect temple for last night's appear ance, and Dr. Wyatt said he hoped to broadcast at least, one of the meetings. The Georgia youth was intro duced by George T. Davis, attor ney for the trio. Davis issued an appeal to oth er American soldiers still in Red China to "come home to the country of your birth." Earlier yesterday at a press conference soon after the former soldiers had arrived from San Francisco, Davis said the Wings of Healing appearances "may give them a few beans in their pockets which they badly need." Cowart, who said he planned to return to Georgia to visit his mother after Sunday, indi cated he may attempt a nation wide lecture tour. Bell, whose wife Jewell ac companied him to Portland, said he had no plans except to return to their home at Olympia, Wash. He told newsmen earlier that the Chinese Reds had threatened to kill him and his wife if he spoke with negotiators at Pan munjom during the Korean war truce talks. Davis claimed Cowart and Bell were "plied daily .with alcohol and marijuana all during the truce talks" and Cowart was hospitalized for surgery to re move him from the scene.
