o 0 SoutKern Oregon College Homecoming Is Scheduled Ashland Southern Oregon college alumni will be welcomed back to the college Friday and Saturday, Nov. 11 and 12. for the traditional homecoming activi ties. The theme is "Remember When." Highlighting the week-end will be the football game at 8 p.m. Saturday on the new col lege field, between Oregon Col lege of Education and SOC. HearingsScheduled Inio Controversial Sale of Timber Washington (U.R) S. L. Peterson, Assistant Secretary of Agriculture, today said a public hearing will ' be held in Port land on the Crescent Lake tim ber sale controversy. A hearing on the proposed sale of 75,000,000 board feet of tim ber in the Windago Pass area near the lake was requested by groups from several Oregon com munities, including Bend, Klam ath Falls, Westfir, Dallas and Tillamook. L & H Lumber company of Sutherlin informally requested the sale of the U. S. Forest Serv ice more than a year ago. The company said it would build a sawmill and chipping operation at Crescent Lake if the sale were effected. Opposed Plan However, central Oregon groups opposed the proposal on the grounds that the sawmill planned would place competitors at a disadvantage in bidding on pine timber stands between Cres cent Lake and Bend. Regional Forester J. Herbert Stone, after a hearing in Bend several months ago, turned down the application by the Sutherlin firm, but Forest Service Chief Richard McArdle reversed this decision. The Bend Chamber of Com merce appealed to the Secretary of Agriculture, and the Portland hearing, a date for which has not yet been set, resulted from the appeal. Halftime ceremonies will in clude a short welcoming address to alumni, guests, and students by SOC President Elmo N. Ste venson, and the crowning of a homecoming queen. Princesses selected by the lettermen's club are Winnette Andrews, Palm Desert- Calif.; Gretchen Ling quist, Medford; Gloria Everts, Eugene; Jo Rasmussen, Grants Pass; and Jean Marshall, Forest Grove. General chairman is Walt Hurst, Glendale. The rally squad will kick off the events with a serpentine of students leading from the dorm at 6:30 p.m. Friday to a bonfire rally at Puller field. Saturday Activities Saturday's activities will be gin at 12:30 p.m. with a noise parade through downtown Ash land, featuring floats to be judged by faculty and alumni for prizes in the various divisions. Riley Winchell. Medford, is in charge of the floats. At 2 p.m. an alumni "buzz ses sion" and registration is sched uled for Susanne Homes Hall. Old grads will be issued name tags admitting them to the foot ball game free. At 3 p.m. Sigma Epsilon Pi will honor its alumni with a tea at the apartment of their adviser, Miss Plichta. , An address, "New Emphases at SOC," will be given by Dr. Stevenson, which will be fol lowed by the election of officers for 'the coming year. After the game, a Homecom ing Dance is scheduled in honor of the returning alumni for 10:30 p.m. at Memorial Court.
