Something is missing from' a child's life these cold winter mornings long underwear. - There are no scenes around the floor furnace or the living room stove with little girls pa tiently tucking long underwear into long stockings. There are no tears because underwear sleeves keep showing below dress cuffs. In fact, so far as half a dozen leaders in the knitted underwear business can determine, there are almost no little girls in the United States today covered from wrists to ankle bones with woolly insulation. Little boys occasionally wear long-legged underwear, but the sleeves are usually short. Some grownups who recall longies as a sure sign of winter still cling to old habits, manu facturers say. But when the present middle-aged and older generation dies out, long under wear may disappear completely. "All-encompassing underwear is unnecessary now," said Hor ace A. carter, ao-year-oia presi dent of a company that has made knitted underwear for genera tions. Now they're insulating the snow suits instead of the chil dren. It's a big step forward, as any adult who spent a self-insulated winter will tell' you. It is humiliating to gaze down on lumpy ankles even when you're eight years old. Carter admitted there were few nostalgic sentiments shown when the drop-seat styles began dropping out of production. 'There are more indoor activ ities which I didn't know as a boy," the octogenarian president said. "Children spend time in the movies, watching television and in indoor club activities. They must be able to remove their warm clothing and that is possible only with outer garments." Guird to Meet Mrs. W. B. Clegg. Mrs. Ches ter Fitch and Mrs. John Bunk er will serve luncheon for - a meeting of St. Mark's auxiliary guild to be held Friday, Novem ber 11, at the church.
