Evidence Indicates
'Explosive Forces'
Involved in Crash
Longmont, Colo. (U.R) Evi
dence of "explosive forces" has
been turned up in the crash of
a United Air Lines plane that
killed 44 persons and the FBI
has been called in on the case.
Jack Parshall, Civil Aeron
autics Board investigator, con
firmed he had heard rumors the
plane was sabotaged but said,
"we have no answers to them at
this time."
Start Studying
"It's a little too early to make
any conjectures," Parshall said.
"We're studying the whole thing
with an open mind."
Parshall said that parts of the
demolished DC6B airliner had
been sent to the FBI laboratory
in Washington for analysis.
Parshall, heading the exten
sive investigation by the CAB,
United Air Lines, and Douglas
Aircraft, said the probe so far
had come up with "evidence of
explosives forces."
This bore out eyewitness ac
counts of the Tuesday night
crash that the plane exploded in
flight.
See Long Inquiry
Parshall was mum on what
else the investigation had turn
ed up. But he predicted the
probe would be a long one. He
said much depended on what
the laboratory reported.
The investigators questioned
witnesses Friday who live near
the scene of the crash. They also
said they are continuing their
piece-by-piece inspection of the
scattered wreckage.
Parshall said the laboratory
reports should be completed in
about 10 days.

County Assessor Robert G.
Fowler Saturday stated under
oath that in his opinion the or
chard classification system setup
in Jackson county by the State
Tax Commission is arbitrary,
and that it would take at least
three months to arrive at valid
and accurate appraisals.
He testified to this effect while
giving a deposition for Attor

with Supreme Court mandamus
proceedings. The deposition tak
ing was the latest step in a long
battle between local orcharists
and the tax commission regard

tions and answers dealing with
Fowler's actions in the matter,
how he handled orders from the
tax commission, and the mech
anics of his proceedings.
Laws Not Defined
As far as he knows, Fowler
said, the classification of A, B
and C orchards has never been
defined, and that he does not
know what they are. He added
that as of Sept. 1, when in
creased valuations were ordered
by the tax commission, it would
have been impossible to make
fair and just appraisals soon
enough to get them on the tax
rolls in time for orchardists to
take advantage of the 3 per cent
tax discount available by pay
ments in advance of Nov. 15.
The tax bills which have been
mailed out include the increased
valuations as determined by the
commission.
Fowler was represented at the
hearing by Deputy District At
torney Gene Piazza and by Theo
dore deLooze, assistant attorney
general assigned to the tax com
mission. Lowry, who represented the
Medford Pear Co. Inc., in pre
senting the orchardists' case to
the Supreme Court, is prepar
ing new pleadings in the man
damus proceedings. .
Chancellor Adenauer
Recovering Strength
Bonn, Germany U.R)
Chancellor Konrad Adenauer is
progressing so well in his recov
ery from pneumonia he will not
have to take a convalescence va
cation, his decors said Saturday.
A medical bulletin issued here
indicated the iron-willed Chan
cellor had turned down the
chance for a vacation to recover
strength following his long ill
ness. "The convalescence of Chan
cellor Konrad Adenauer is pro
gressing very well," the bulletin
said. "Only the unfavorable cli
mate prevents him from taking
walks outside his house.
"He has also very well en
dured the strain of long confer
ences. A leave of convalescence
does not seem required from a
medical point of view."
Adenauer spent the entire af
ternoon out of bed Friday for
the first time since he was taken
ill with bronchial pneumonia
last Oct. 9.
