MYLER G Uniled Press Correspondent Washington (U.R) What can be done to cut down the slaughter on the nation's streets and highways? The three Es might help. They stand for education, engineering and enforcement. R. W. Tupper of the American Automobile Association believes "the great promise of the future" lies in the driver-education pro gram in high schools. It was pioneered nearly 25 years ago by Prof. Amos E. Ney hart of Pennsylvania State Uni versity. Now 7,749 of the coun try's 24,000 high schools offer traffic courses which include behind-the-wheel training. The program has a long way to go, however. Of some 1.600,000 high school i students eligible for such train ing each year, only about 470,000 or a little over one-fourth get a complete course including on-the-road instruction. Fewer than 1,000,000 get even class room instruction on how to drive and live. On The Side By E. V. Durling (Distributed by King Future Syndicate, Inc.) Then she frankly told me that wearing a derby hat made my face look like the moon coming over the mountain. Complaints Among the things in which Is such training worthwhile? A survey showed that drivers who received high school train ing had only half as many acci dents as those who didn't. School Patrol Helps The school patrol system, which got started back in 1923 27, is credited with saving many lives. When the system was getting under way, some 3,800 children in the 5-14 age group were slaughtered annually. The slaughter is still going on, but last year it was down xo 2,350. Tupper also believes that re placement of hazardous roads with express highways, coupled with limits on speed and effec tive enforcement, will greatly improve the safety record. A lot of people get killed on turnpikes, but not as many on a mileage, basis, he says, as wind up their lives on other roads The Automotive Safety Founda tion believes road improvements could cut accidents more than 40 per cent. Joseph R .McCarthy, yesterday threw out four counts of a six-couiit in dictment charging a former Harvard psychologist with con tempt of Congress. Judge . Bailey Aldrich dis missed two counts against Leo J. Kamin, 27, and acquitted him on two others which charged Kamin failed to name Commun ists at Harvard at a hearing Jan. 14, 1954, before the Wisconsin Republican. The judge accused McCarthy of going on a "fishing expedi tion" when McCarthy asked Kamin questions about anyone teaching at Harvard or con nected with Harvard who were known by Kamin to be Com munists. The decision came on a de fense motion for acquittal on all six counts. The jury-waived trial was to resume today on two remaining, counts charging Kamin with re fusing to name former Commun ist associates who might have been connected with classified government work. there is still considerable room for improvement are lunch coun ter coffee, ball point pens and the "stickum" on envelopes.
