Thursday, November 3, 1955 St. Mary's Peps Up as 5B Tussle With Malin Nears rOUHTHEW MEDrOHD (OUrSOW) MAIL TSI8UWS ii S B B l B St. Marys high gridders are '"beginning to pep up" for the District 5B title encounter here with Malin, Coach Millard Webb stated today. The scramble be tween the Jackson and Klamath county champions is set for 8 p.m. Saturday on the Medford high school field. "I think they're going to be up," Webb reported. "They're working hard." The club has scrimmaged twice this week and Webb indicated that the Cru saders "looked pretty good." The St. Mary's gang is still getting lots of fundamental work in blocking, tackling and pass ing. Webb indicated that the club is polishing its old plays rather than adding much that's new. I"lakui Out The mentor stated that his squad is still somewhat "beat up" but said that for the most part injuries are not serious. End Jerry Flakus is definitely out because of a concussion suffered in the Jacksonville game. Half back Laval Meunier, who suf fered a dislocated elbow in the same scrap, is a highly doubtful participant, although Webb said, "There's a chance on him. One of the battles on the club c now is for a starting tackle " spot. It's between Dave Crevier and Eddie Fogal. Crevier, hurt in the opener with Illinois Val ley is just now hitting stride and has looked excellent in the last couple of drill?. It appears a tussle, too, between Rodney Read and Dennis Dibble for an end assignment. Dibble is com ing along and showing good de fensively. Tony Miksche is an other wingman rated as "coming along." Dave Hartley is catching stride as a linebacker. Paup Hurti Ankle Halfback Dick Paup hurt an ankle in practice Tuesday but the injury is not thought serious. Facing Malin the Crusaders will meet a big tough single wing club led by Ray Johnson, 160 pound left half. He runs as well as passes. Power is provided by Norm Oliva, 190-pound right half, who's also good at catching passes. Glen Steyskal at fullback is another vet. At ends, Roger Dokken is a good offensive lad while Wes Drazil is a tough defensive play er. Allen Meyers, Roy Ingram, Grant Saunders and John Pierce are about even in their line play Malin, like St. Mary's has six victories for the year. The Mus tangs also tied Henley. owling COMMERCIAL LEAGUE At the end of the 11th week, the Commercial League ends up with "position night," meaning the title for the round. Mail Trib une had a rough time with Dad's Hideaway, and only managed to stay tied for first with a close third game. (U.R) Captains of both the British and American Ryder Cup teams pre dicted today that the 1955 matches starting here Saturday would be won on the putting greens. Coastal Stream Closures Sought Salem U.R) Secretary of State Earl Newbry yesterday re ceived a new initiative measure calling for closure of all Oregon coast streams south of the Co lumbia river to commercial fish ing for salmon or steelhead. The initiative was spearhead ed by Chester L. Hogan, Port land; Wayne N. Doughton, Sa lem; Rose W. Alexander, Taft, and Thomas Forrest, Broadbent.
