Copco, Commission
Sign Agreement;
Value Questioned
Sacramento, Calif. 'U.R The
California-Oregon Power Cora
pany and the California-Oregon
Klamath River Commission late
yesterday signed an agreement
for priority use of water in the
Klamath basin. But there was
doubt expressed whether the
agreement had much value.
In the agreement, COPCO
agreed to the principle of "sub
ordinating' generation of elec
tric power in favor of other
water uses home use, irriga
tion, recreation and industrial
use.
But attorneys for the commis
sion said the agreement would
have little value unless it is in
corporated in Copco's federal
operating license issued by the
Federal Power Commission.
They said state laws would be
insufficient to enforce the agree
ment because both the Klamath
river and the land surrounding
it were in federal jurisdiction.
'When it came to adding the
agreement to the federal license,
COPCO reneged. Attorney Greg
ory Harrison said "I am suffic
iently fearful that inclusion of
this agreement would require
the FPC to go into a redetermi
nation of the entire project."
The project involved is Big Iend
No. 2 development, for which
Copco recently acquired a per
mit. Harrison said the company
would be no part of any move
that might reopen the hearings
on that permit. He explained the
company had fought since 1952
for the federal license and did
not want to jeopardize it in any
way.
60,000,000 Turkeys
Due on U.S. Tables
Kansas City, Mo. (U.R)
Americans will gobble up 60,
000,000 turkeys during Thanks
giving and Christmas holiday
seasons this year, and pay the j
highest prices on record for !
them. j
But the meat will be better
and there will be plenty to go
around for everyone. j
James Hoekscra, poultry man-:
ager of Armour Packing Com- i
pany, said turkey prices will be j
about 10 per cent higher for top j
grade birds and that there will i
be 3,000,000 fewer available for j
table consumption. !
Armors, the world's largest j
supplier of turkeys, estimated j
retail prices for top grade birds
will be near 60 cents a pound for
hens and 45 cents a pound for
toms.
Queen Elizabeth -At
Royal Premier
London (U.R) A smiling
Queen Elizabeth II attended the
royal film performance last
night, the brightest event of the
year in British movie-making.
She had smiles for the thou
sands who jammed into Leices
ter Square to see the sovereign
and the stars arrive for the gala
performance of Alfred Hitch
rock's "To Catch a Thief."
And she showed concern for
Italian movie star Gina Lollo
brigida who almost did not get
to attend because a plane with
her clothes was delayed in Paris.
The queen asked, Miss Lollo
brigida if things had turned out
all right and sa'id she could ap
preciate the star's anxiety.
Greek Police Fire r
On Cyprus footers
Paris, Greece (U.R) Police

Pelopennesus Island city today. j
At least 40 civilians and 35 po
licement were reported injured
in the demonstrations against
British occupied buildings. The
riots began this morning and
continued on into the afternoon.
Patras is about 110 miles from
Athens.
A recond riot , was reported
from Mitylene on the Greek is
land of Lesbos, only a few miles
off the Turkish coast. There
were no immediate reports of
casualties.
SURPRISE RIBBON
Cheboygan, Mich. (U.R) Mrs.
William Blaszczak was mystified
when she received a blue ribbon
recently from the Northern
Michigan Fair. Then her daugh
ter, Nancy, 11, explained that
she had taken along one of her
mother's coffee cakes when she
entered a pan of muffins in the
baked goods contest. Nancy won
a red ribbon for her muffins.
