WILSON United Press Correspondent Washington U.R) The Na tional Lawyers Guild is in the news again, this time with a plan to ask the Supreme court to forbid the Justice depart ment to tag it as a subversive C o m m unist front. The guild and its mem bers more of ten have been Lyle C. Wilson in the news as followers of the Communist Party line, legal defenders of Communist fellow travelers, or as leader in the occasional effort to put J. Edgar Hoover and the FBI out of business. The guild does .not like Hoover. That, leastwise, would reflect many of the guild's preoccupa tions from its birth in 1937 down to 1950 when the House Un-American Activities committee last made a detailed report. That re port began like this: . "The National Lawyers Guild isthe foremost legal bulwark of the Communist Party, its front organizations, and controlled un ions. ' "Since its inception it has nev er failed to rally to ,the legal defense of the Communist Party and the individual members thereof, including known espion age agents." Organized Student Division The committee reported that since 1946 the guild .had operat ed a student division to enable law students to join in its activ ities. As of 1950, the student div isions were as follows: University of Michigan, Uni versity of California at Berkeley, 4 P.M MONDAY Regular to $2.50 METAL MOULDING Lifetime Quality Alumi num use for counter tops, built-ins sinks work tables, etc. Give your job a finished ap pearance 6 ft. lengths choice of styles. C, the institutions in the latter city being unnamed. The report continued: "The real nature of the guild's philosophy comes into sharp focus during court procedures. Almost without exception, its leading members . . . seek to bring the courts and its proced ures into disrepute." Judge Harold Medina cited for contempt six lawyers who de fended the 11 top Communists convicted in his court of advo cating the overthrow of the Unit ed States by force and violence. Conduct of the attorneys had been notorious. All were mem bers of the lawyers guild. "There is no doubt in the op inion of the committee," the re port said, "that the National Lawyers Ciuild attacks on the Federal Bureau of Investigation are part of an overall Communist strategy aimed at weakening our nation's defenses against the in ternational Communist conspir acy." The report recalled that not able members of the Roosevelt administration and other prom inent persons who had joined the guild at its. inception were I soon resigning in protest against its policies. Among these were Attorney General (later associate justice) Robert H. Jackson; As sistant Secretary of State A. A. Berle Jr., Nathan B. Margold, Interiot Department solicitor, and Judge Ferdinand Pecora of the New York Supreme Court. The committee recommended ALL FIXTURES FOR SALE! 9:30 A.. Brownell hasn't got around to doing it yet and the guild hopes to beat him to the punch before the Supreme Court. Morgan Pledges Candidate Backing Klamath Falls (U.R) Ore gon Democratic Chairman How ard Morgan said here Saturday he would extend the full facil ities of the party in Oregon equally to any candidate for the party's presidential nomination. Morgan said his recent criti cism of New York Gov. Averill Harriman as a party candidate was issued as a private citizen and not as a party chairman. Morgan was in Klamath Falls to complete arrangements for a Democratic dinner next Friday at which principal speaker will be Sen. Hubert Humphrey (D Minn.). The party chief supported the view of. "Sen. Wayne Morse (D- Ore.) who had predicted that the Republican candidate for United States Senator from Oregon would be Gov. Paul Patterson. Columbia Sturgeon Hit by Lamprey Loss Portland (U.R) White stur geon in the Columbia river are starving because of the rapid disappearance of lampry, ac cording to Ivan Donaldson, bi ologist with the Corps of Eng ineers at Bonneville dam. Donaldson reports that em aciated sturgeon are now com mon in the Columbia. Lamprey are unable to pass through the fishways at Bonneville in great numbers because their suction discus don't operate properly on the concrete wall. Donaldson, writing the 1954 annual report on the passage of fish over" Bonneville and McNary dams, said a simple wooden rail ing the length of the fishways would enable all lamprey to pass through, and thus would help provide an ample diet for the white sturgeon.
