Thefts Reported In Medford Area; Two Cars Stolen A rash o thefts in Medford during the vvek end resulted in the loss of two autos, six bicycles, and items valued at about $30 belonging to Cali fornia Oregon Power company, according to city police and sher iff's office reports. An auto owned by Hugh Ed ward Ha gen, 1905 Stewart ave., was stolen sometime Saturday night from a parking lot at Wainscott's Pharmacy. Car Theft Reported Russel Owen Brownson, 4 North Orange st., reported to city police at 10 a.m. Monday that his car had been stolen from the parking lot at Barn's Shell Service, 618 West Main st. In another parking lot theft, loss of a license plate and bump er guard from a car owned by Louis Timber Brown while it was parked at the Luman's Mar ket lot, on the corner of East Fourth' and North Front sts., was reported Sunday to city po lice. Equipment Stolen iTwo rubber blankets and an extension' ladder were stolen Saturday from California Ore gon Power company. The equip ment was being used while mak ing repairs on a pump behind Mason Ehrman company, 2195 Sage rd. The theft was com mitted while employees were gone during the lunch hour,, ac cording to a sheriff's office re port. , ; Bicycles reported stolen over the week end were owned by Cleone Ellen Stacy, 660 North Oiange st.; Dale Crawford Math- -ews, 914 Ross lane; Bernard Kieth Schultz, 717 Broad st.; Bonnie J. Schaecher, 1129 Da kota st., and-two bicycles from Robert Allen Bright and his sis ter, 625 Franquette st. Per kins and daughter, Marie who are staying for the present with Mrs. Perkin's sister, Mrs. Olive Parks on Indian Creek rd. : Other newcomers to Shady Cove are Mr. and Mrs. Charles Wheaton and three daughters from Seaside, Ore., who are rent ing the Orage Houston home in the Cove. They have two of the girls attending the Shady Cove school. Wheaton is employed by Ben Nork Logging. Mrs. Zella Tullis and Mrs. Scottie Parrick, both Trail,, are vacationing in- Lewiston, Ida., where Mrs. Tullis is visiting with her brother. Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Paul son, Shady Cove, were called to Sacramento, Calif., recently due to the illness of Paulson's moth er. She was somewhat improved when they returned home. Mr. and Mrs. Don Sloper Sr., Grants Pass, were recent visitors at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Sheppard, Shady Cove. This was the first time Mrs. Sloper Jr., whose former home was in Connecticut, had been West. Mrs. Clara Thurman, Shady Cove, has returned from her trip East where she visited with her brother. F. M. Walser, Fram- ingham, Mass. The song "O Blue Flame sung by Revel Ray with music by Mrs. Lila Bates, Eagle Point, and the lyrics of her daughter, Louise Bates, is being played on radio stations throughout the valley as a new release from the Roulette Record company of Las Vegas, Nev. Mr. and Mrs. John McNaugh- ton. San Rafael, Calif., are houseguests of Mrs. McNaugh- ton's sister and husband, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Cross, Shady Cove. U.R) A rag ing eas fire shooting flames 100 O feet into the air and roaring like a "dczen tornadoes threatened ' to destroy this small East Texas oiLtown today. nelpless residents could only await the arrival of four veteran oil well fire fighters from Hous ton. - The experienced fighters probably will try to blow the Well out with nitroglycerin, but there was no assurance they would succeed. The flames shooting into the air set fire to the main business district a block away. Residents living near the well loaded their ' furniture in moving vans and left for neighboring towns until the danger is past. . . The well blew out about 1 p.m. yesterday as a crew of the Gibson Drilling Co., of Kilgore worked to seal off the gas and make the well an oil producer again. The public school nearby was immediately evacuated, and gas was shut off m houses in the area. The gas caught fire at 4:55 p.m., apparently from friction caused by sand and rock parti cles being blown out of the well. Witnesses said the rushing, rumbling noise, ' varying in in tensity, sounded like a dozen tornadoes. Sheila Dolenshek, Trad, was guest of honor at a surprise birthday party given for her by Chloe Willson at Chloe's home. Games were played and a hike was made ending with a picnic in the hills. A venison dinner was served to the girls in the evening. Guests were Susie Chubb, Linda Eccleston, Shady Cove, and Joan Houston, Chloe Willson and Sheila Dolenshek, Sheila Dolenshek and Susie Chubb stayed overnight with Chloe Willson. Steelhead Post No. 6881, VFW, and ladies auxiliary, will spon sor a Pre-Armistice dance on Thursday evening, Nov. 10, at the post hall with Jim Rhea's orchestra furnishing the music, Mrs. Ivan Hale, Shady Cove, was hostess in her home for a birthday party honoring the eighth birthday of her daughter, Carol Hale." Ralph Barry Shady Cove, re ceived an injury to his back in a logging mishap this past week He is able to be up and around now and is convalescing nicely, Jack Ross, Trail, underwent an operation on his arm this past week at Sacred Heart hospital and is now convalescing at home .His arm was injured while on the job at Smith river. Mrs. Mae B. Lane, Trail, has returned from a trip to West Los Angeles and North Holly wood where she visited relatives and friends. The Shady Cove PTA is spon soring a carnival at the Shady Cove school on Saturday, Oct. 29. About 15 booths will be in operation. Mrs. . Alton Baker, Eugene, wife of the district governor of Rotary International, was guest of honor at a dinner on Thurs day evening, Oct. 20, at the home of Mrs. Miles Williamsin Shady Cove. Wives of Rotary members attending the dinner were Mes dames Jim Hopkins, Ole Horn seth, A. Myklebye, Ed Houston, Louis Belvail, Grant Hubbell, E. S. Strother, Ray Briggs, Car roll Watson, and the hostess. District Governor Alton Baker was entertained by the Rotary members at their dinner meet ing at the Mountain View cafe. Ashland Ashland Junior High students are sponsoring a skating party at the Ashland Skateway Wednesady, Oct. 26 at 7 p.m. as an Ashland-Talent Youth Fund-raising activity. Chicken Pox Tops County Illnesses Thirteen cases of chicken pox topped the list of communicable diseases reported in Jackson, county for the week ended Oct. 22, according to a report releas ed today by the county health department. The cases included five in Medford, and four each in Pros pect and Elk-Trail. Other illnesses included in the report were one case of pneu monia in Medford and one case of measles in Gold Hill.
