October 21, 1955 MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE FIVE , EXTEND HEARTY CONGRATULATIONS TO THE' IMS MOTORS GUNFIRE TEST on highway signs, conducted by laboratory tech nicians at a northwest rifle range, proved fir plywood g greater resistance to this act of vandalism. NIGHT SCENE of highway signs following part of vandalism test gives some idea as to degree of readability remaining. Note metal sign, lower left, defaced by bending. ENGINEER examines results of test on highway signs to determine their resistance to bending forces. Fir plywood showed superiority to signs of metal products. Fir Plywood Signs Prove Resistant to Most Damage Highway traffic departments have just received a liberal assist in their uphill fight to keep control signs readable in the face of vandalism. These departments can turn now to accurate laboratory data which proves conclusively - that fir plywood signs ar more re sistant to damage than metal and fiber products. A west coast industrial lab oratory produced the data after a long series of tests on all con trol sign materials in current use. Fir plywood signs - with medium density resin fiber over lay for an optimum paint sur face made the best showing in the tests. All of the materials were subjected to standardized "vandalism" attacks, approxi mating as nearly as possible the senseless damage inflicted to signs along U.S. highways. With the exception which was factory-finished and reflectorized the signs were finished in a recommended manner and Scotchlight reflective sheeting applied to one face. These were the 24"x25" diamond shaped warning, signs conforming to the Federal manual of Uniform Traf fic Control for sheets and high ways. A common act of violence is the throwing of rocks or bottles at street and highway signs, often done from a moving auto mobile. To standardize a com parable vandalism test a catapult was used to hurl objects against the face of each sign with the same force. About the same amount of overall damage re sulted with all materials. How ever, the Scotchlight sheeting on the plywood base materials suf fered less damage than that on signs of the other materials. Signs often will be deliberate ly or accidentally knocked down, causing extensive damage, es pecially if the sign material lands with any force on edge against a hard surface. For this test, the signs were attached to a conventional 4"x4" wooden post. The post was fastened to a base plate with a heavy hinge which kept post and sign upright until a " weighted pendulum knocked them down. Here, again plywood signs showed the great est resistance to damage. In the gunfire test, each sign was attached to an individual 4"x4" post and used as a target at a rifle range. Here, too, ply wood signs showed considerably more resistance to damage from bullets. .... .. ... Again, the plywood signs showed the greatest resistance to what is probably the most com mon form of vandalism against such objects: Attempting to bend the sign or tear it from its post. Metal signs with which plywood was compared could be bent by hand; some very easily; synthe tic fiber signs offered little re sistance because ' they could be readily pulled off the post. Since most acts of sign vandal ism are committed on the spur of the moment, and in a hurried manner because of the fear of being caught, the tests were de signed t to see which material could withstand a quick attack from bullets, thrown objects, oi by hand. In all of the tests, plywood signs proved that they aremore likely to survive and remain readable. Salem .Transit Line Faces Loss of Permit Salem U.R) An ordinance to revoke the franchise of the City Transit company in Salem will be introduced to the Salem city council in the next few weeks, City Councilman Dave O'Hara said yesterday.
