Durling (Distributed by Kinfl Fwtaraa Syndicate, lac) What men of medicine refer to as a common cold should have a more impressive name. The present designation tends to" be little the disabling powers of that irritating and extremely un comfortable ailment. Then con sider that it is acknowledged there is no cure for the common cold. It comes upon you and there is nothing much to be done but to grin and bear it for a period of at least seven days. There are preparations that can make it easier to bear but for an affliction, so disparagingly referred to as the "common cold" it can be quite a trouble maker. As you may have guessed I have a "common cold." ' Plaasa Not How many different brands of cigarettes does your favorite tobacconist carry? There s a shop on the Avenue of the Amer icas in Manhattan that has reg ularly in stock 130 different brands of cigarettes. That's quite a stock. However, Geneva, Switzerland, .that had in stock 415 different brands of cigar ettes. Just as Good When I told the pharmacist I wanted another brand of as pirin than the one he offered me, he said: "Why pay more for the same thing? All aspirin is alike. This brand is just as good as any." I insisted on hav ing my favorite brand. I don't know anything about the manu facture of aspirin tablets but I believe it might be possible for one firm to make a better prod uct than another even if using the same ingredients. By the way, what product was it that used the slogan: "A parrot can say 'just as good' but it won't know what it is talking about Asking Queries from clients. Q. Do you believe in lucky numbers? A. Reading Seems to be considerable cur rent dissatisfaction at the read ing ability of youngsters. How old were you when you learned to read? I don't remember when I started. However, I recall when around 9 or 10 years old I was reading such classics as "Old King Brady," "The Opium Ring," "Frank . Merriwell at Yale," "The James Boys in Mis souri" and "Frank Reade, the Boy Inventor." After that I re call reading "Around the World in Eighty Days," by Jules Verne, "For the Honour of the School," by Ralph Henry Barbour and "Rodney Stone," by Con an Doyle. When 12 I tackled some advanced reading. I began read ing the Racing Form. Vamps " A current, satirical musical comedy titled, "The Vamp," deals with the "vampire" type actress 'of the silent film days. Of -course, everybody has heard of Theda Bara. But how about some of the other "vamp" film specialists? The top three next to Theda were Valeska Suratt, Virginia Pearson and Louise Glaum. The last named was the original "Tiger Woman." Changed Mama. - Note a young female has at tered the name Shirley to SherlL Well, I can stand that. I can even stand a change from Edith to Edythe. Or from Rose to Rosye. QUIGG Unitad Prats Corraspondent Ciudad Trujillo, Dominican Republic (U.R) The language barrier, like a woman, is a some time thing. But it can lead to some charm-' ing situations. . . English-speaking people who come to this tropical country in the Caribbean for a vacation find some natives who speak a lot of English in addition to their native Spanish and some who speak and understand not-so-much. To get right down to it, my roommate in the palatial Jar agua Hotel here spent a morn ing sun-soaking at the swimming pool, and in the afternoon he went spear fishing. Watch Out for Sun And at night when he came home, he was doing a slow burn. Doing? His legs were done to a turn. At 18 degrees of latitude above the equator, you have to watch out for the hard-working sun. He asked me if I had anything good for sunburn. I said no but that maybe he should ask the hotel. So he picked up the phone to get the desk. A lady answered. She was Spanish-speaking, but she knew enough English to get along. "Do you have anything for sunburn?" my roommate asked, without wasting time on pre liminary conversation. "Un momento, and I'll see if we have," she replied. There was a wait of a minute or so. And then the lady was back on the phone. "No,, nothing for you, Mr. Sunburn," she said cheerily. Well, this is a true story. But it was not typical, because every where you go you find plenty of persons who can chatter with you in English. The country is making a bid for the tourist trade. A $25,000, 000 Dominican Republic Fair for Peace and Progress is a building on 125 acres beside the Caribbean. It opens Dec. 20 and lasts into spring. Ciudad Trujillo, the capital, is a clean city. You can drink the water right out of the tap a condition that does not prevail in many countries. NEBRASKA FARM STANDARD Lincoln, Neb.
