SIXTEEN MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE V Wednesday, October 19. 1955' Capitol Planners Study Methods of Mall Development Salem (U.R) the Capitol Planning Commission met with -its advisory committee of archi tects and landscape architects for the first time here yesterday and two methods of attaining a master plan for development of the Capitol Mall were suggested: T. Professor Fred A. Cuthbert, Eugen suggested the commis sion offer "$1000 or $2000" to groups of architects in various parts of the state for "sketch" plans from which , the commisv sion would be developed into a fully-detailed master plan be fore submission ' to the State Board of Control. 2. Commission chairman Rob ert W. Sawyer of Bend and Gov. Paul Patterson suggested that Robert . W. Keally, New York architect who designed Oregon's present capitol build ing, be hired in an advisory capacity. He would work with whatever Oregon architects and landscapers were retained to de velop a master plan, the theory being that, since Keally designed the capitol, he had an overall concept of how the mall area should be developed. . It was decided at the meeting to split members of the advisory committee into three groups Portland area architects, Eugene area architects and landscape architects. Each group would study what it considered the best method of developing the mall. Written reports will be submit ted to the commission by Dec. "1. Included in the development program will be erection of sub sequent buildings within the mall area, landscaping and in , tegration of mall traffic with the city one-way traffic grid. DULLES TO VISIT ROME Rome (U.R) U. S. Secretary of State John Foster Dulles' visit to Rome next week end was hailed as a shot in the arm for American prestige in Italy. Ital ian government spokesmen ex pressed "great satisfaction" at the .announcement from Wash-; ington. - . . ... Council Authorizes Study off Berrydale Sanitary Problems City Manager Robert. Duff was authorized by the city council last night to study and submit a report on three possi bilities to help solve an adverse sanitary condition in the Berry dale area. The three possibilities are re vision of the present contract with Medford, a new contract or annexation. Duff's report will be submitted to the - planning commission prior tocouncil con sideration. ' Bertydale Sanitary district of ficials have requested a new contract because the district is now able to finance construc tion of a sewer system. Ervin B. Hogan, attorney representing the district, said a new contract would verify the - present con tract and set up 'new rates. ' The present contract, he said, is not clear as to whether it cov ers the entire district or that area which is .now served by one 12-inch sewer line. The line serves about 20 residents, and about 375 connections would be required if the entire district were served. Hogan pointed out that resi dents in the area are anxious to proceed with construction be cause there is a "serious health problem out there.'' Duff also was authorized to study a request from residents in the Kenwood-Grandview area for a proposed sanitary district. A report of the study will be submitted to. the planning com mission prior to presentation be fore the council. . In other action last night, the council adopted an ordinance .creating an emergency fund ex pediture of $110.50 for the city's share in participating in acqui sition of a mobile-radio unit for civil defense purposes. The theory is that some local resident years ago liberated a bowl of the tropical fish and the fish survived and multiplied in the cool creek waters. Thous ands of goldfish, some of them a foot long, now inhabit the creek. recommended by the planning commission. . The council approved a recom mendation of Duff to provide space at municipal airport ter minal for Avis-U-Drive. Hertz Rent-A-Car company, which has had space in the terminal build ing about a year and a half, is to be given preference. W. H. Conrad company was granted a third 30-day time ex tension on the Eastwood hills sewer project because of con struction difficulties and delays caused by easement acquire ments. Margaret's Story Known; Paddy Wagon Arrives Madrid, Spain (U.R) A man who showed up at the offices of the newspaper "Madrid" yester day said he knew the secret of the Townsend-Princess Margaret story it all revolved around his daughter who was in love with Townsend. The newsmen lost interest in the man's story, however, when an ambulance arrived and took the man back to a nearby insane asylum from which he had escaped. Silverton Man Killed As Car Hits Bridge ' Salem (U.R)rOrrin F. Was sn, 61, Silverton, was killed yes terday evening when the car in which he was riding struck a bridge abutment on the Hazel Green-Silverton highway, state police reported. Hospitalized with injuries believed to be not serious were Lee Wasson, nephew of the dead man, and Martin Kiddelson. Simpkins Concert Brings in $658.80 Crater Lions reported today that a gross of $658.80 was re ceived through ticket sales for the recent Arthur Lee Simpkins concert which they sponsored at the Medford Senior high school auditorium. : .
