Tommy Prothro, head football coach at Oregon State college, is the Qchoice of many Californians to succeed Pappy Waldorf as head - iootball coach at California, Thris Kowitz, sports editor of the Corvallis Gazette-Times, said yesterday. Prothro denied he had been approached directly or indirect ly about the job. Kowitz said in a signed article that th Southern Seas club, a University of California alumni gt9 up in the Los Angeles area, was supporting Prothro for the head coaching job at California. He said the club has gone so far as to nominate a successor to Waldorf and the men they have suggested is Prothro. Prothro said no such proposi tion has been made to him.
