TEW MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE Tuesday, October 18, 1955 Key To Future limber Supplies Said To Lie With Farmers, Private Tract Owners Portland U.R) The United States must find the great bulk of its future timber reeds in its own forests and the key to fu ture supplies lies with some 4,- 500,000 farmers and other pri vate owners of mainly small tracts of timberland, the chief Qf the U.S. Forest Service said yesterday. Richard E. McArdle, address ing the Society of American For esters meeting here, reported that forest growing conditions on these small lands were the "ooorest." It is the Edgar Fahs Smith Memorial Collection, given to the university in 1928. following the death of. Dr. Smith, who was provost, chemistry professor and a former president of the American Chemical Society. It was housed in his former office in the Harrison Laboratory and has, just been reopened for general use in the Hare Build ing. In the collection are some 9,000 books and pamphlets, 1,400 manuscripts and 3,400 portrait prints and medallions of chem ists and chemical subjects. Mr. and Mrs. Joe Oxendine had a dull evening without TV recently when a tube on their .set went out. Worse still, they faced a big repair bjll. , The next morning, however, Mrs. Oxendine told her husband she had had a queer dream. "I dreamed I turned on the TV, and it was all right. Got the clearest kind of picture." The Oxendines turned on their set, and there it was. He said the review asumed in estimating future timber de mand that the United States would have a populatio nof 210, 000,000 by 1975 and 275,000,000 by the year 2000. Two levels in timber use trends were used in projecting timber demands of this increased population. ( One anticipated decreased con sumption of wood, a declining per capita demand and increase in real price. Because of popula tion increase, however; this low er trend would demand by the year 2000 some 67 per cent more wood products than 1952 con sumption in this country. Will Hold. Present Place The other anticipated that wood will hold its present place in the national economy and calls for - an - estimated increase of 105 per. cent above the 1952 total by the year 2000. McArdle said that Canada is counted on to increase its im ports "but in amounts insuffi cient to contribute materially to ward satisfying the increased demands in the United States." He said that action taken dur ing the next 20 years will decide where the U.S. stands in timber supply at the end of the century. "Forest conditions are best on public and forest industry such as tree farm ownerships," he said. He said acceleration of recent "encouraging" forestry trends is vital if the timber resources are to be reasonably abundant 50 years from now. Four Possibilities McArdle listed four possibil ities for permanently adding to timber supplies. 1. Reducing non-salvage loss of 10,000,000,000 board feet an nually to insects and disease. . 2. Planting 50,000,000 more acres of presently non-productive forest lands to grow 8,000, 000 board feet of sawtimber an nually. 3. Improving timber growth in one fourth of commercial forest land which is understocked with trees. , 4. He noted there is no excess of forest land in the country as land has been cleared for agricul tures, highways have been built and towns have sprung up and urban areas expanded. DeWitt Nelson, director of the California Department of Na tural Resources, said that to as sure an adequate future timber crop "we must give Mother Na- tions, insect infestation, disease ture more help than ever be fore." Protection of Resources Nelson spoke on protection of forest resources in converting the old-growth into a new one. "How succesful we are in getting a healthy annual crop will depend on many variables such as fire, seed production, rodent popula- infestation and the management policy of the landowner for the next 25, 50 or 75 years. He said, "the management phi losophy of most major timber owners has evolved to where management is willing to plow some of its profits back into the woods for ' tomorrow's timber crop." . E. P. Stamm, vice president of Crown Zellerbach Corp.; told foresters that a shortage of ac cess roads was the main obstacle to a maximum sustained yield output in the Douglas fir region.
