Weeds Form Greatest Problem for Farmers Washington (U.R) There is one war going on today that never makes the headlines, even though it cost $4,000,000,000 a year. It's the constant battle be tween the farmer and the weed. Weeds are among the most ex pulsive pests farmers have to fight. Annual losses due to the lowly weed are estimated at $4. 000,000,000, according to the Manufacturing Chemists Asso ciation. Besides being soil-robbers, weeds are water-pilferers. The average ragweed the bane of hayfever sufferers soaks up three times the amount of water Deeded by a corn plant. But farmers are getting a scientific lift in the fight. A number of synthetic week-killers are helping farmers to in crease productivity. One application of weed-killer 2, 4D, costing about $2.50 an acre, resulted in an Okla homa rancher increasing forage and beef production by over 50 per cent, the association said. Chemicals used in wheat- growing' land added three bushels more an acre. And in the corn country, use of chemi cal control has shown increased yields of from 10 to 40 bushels per acre. Farmers paid less per kilowatt for electric power in 1954 than in previous years. The president praised the government-owned oil monopoly's program of exploration, drilling and production which resulted in discovery of llnew oilfields and drilling of 354 wells in the past 12 months. Production for this period was 91,400,000 barrels up 13,400, 000 over the previous year, Ruiz Cortines said. The chief executive pointed out that Mexico's oil -income from 29,299,000 barrels export ed during the past 12 months totaled $45,040,000 an increase of $17,360,000 over the previous year's total. In his third annual state of the nation address, Ruiz Cortines lauded the oil industry's role in the nation's economic recovery and said $4,560,000 from petrol eum income was spent for school, medical and social services for employees. Looking to the future, the president said the government's oil program calls for capital in vestments of $61,400,000 during the next 12 months, an increase of $12,000,000 over last year. (U.R) Almost 20 per cent of the na-j tion's oil resources, hitherto un reachable because of the earth's paraffin barrier, now can be tap ped, General Electric Co., re ports. The company says a heating device, which it developed joint ly with N. W. Curson Associates The average new house built last year had 1,140 square feet of floor area, making it 5 per cent larger than the average house built in 1941. of California, can literally melt its way through this pariffin barrier found in most low-producing wells. The so-called bar rier is a gummy substance form ed from heavy, sludgy crude oil. The two firms believe the new heater will boost the output of low-producing wells 900 per cent. In one well, Curson report ed, productionn jumped from five to 45 barrels a day after the device was used. The heater, an 18-foot-lohg as sembly, is sealed in pipes and enclosed in a rigid conduit to be lowered into the well shaft. The effects of the heat open the way for consistent pumping, GE said. Teachers Encouraged To Explain Problems Bloomington, 111. (U.R) A businessman believes that teach ers should speak up loud and clear about school problems. Irving B. Harris, chairman of the board of Science Research Associates of Chicago, told a meeting of 1,000 administrators and teachers at an Illinois State Normal University conference here that local organizations often want to be helpful but don't know how. "Too many teachers seem to shy away-' from the public," he said. "Some may even have un consciously chosen teaching as a means of avoiding too much con tact with the public." There's no point, Harris told the teachers in "bawling out other people or wringing your hands" over financial problems. He advised them to start a "long-term . community public relations project on a local level based on continuing opinion re search." ' fflnrrrc rs? man I Weisfield's Jewelers, 122 E.
