o O TWO MEDFOHD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE Teachers Greeted By PTA Gold Hill Gold Hill Parent Teacher association held its first meeting of fall Thursday, Octo ber 13, in the form of a welcome party honoring the teachers and newcomers to the community ivirs. ugaen Kellogg, program chairman, introduced Gilbert Mack, principal, who in turn presented members of the facul ty, giving a resume of the train ing, teaching experience, and family interests of each. Mr. Mack also introduced Mrs. Adah Jones, extra teacher, and other personnel associated with the school. The faculty members, in addi tion to Mr. Mack, are Mrs. Wilda Franks, Mrs. Barbara Toner, Miss Mary Klocker, Mrs. Marie Brannock, Miss Louise Ramsev, Mrs. Ida von Buskirk, Mrs. -Lois Stabler, Deane Roberts, William Brewster, Mrs. Gertrude Jacob- sen, tfoiand Griffith, Mrs. Mar guerite Black and Charles Cook. Mrs. Ralph Hixson, president. presided over the busfness meet ing and introduced the new parent teacher officers and com mittee chairmen. 3, Mrs. Norman Gail, family re lations cnairman, announced plans which are taking form for discussion groups to begin at a later date, mental health being of special interest this year. She also stressed the importance of the Child Guidance clinic and urged the support of parents. Mrs. Gail invited teachers and parents to attend the annual Hallowe'en party honoring school and Crater High school, teachers of both Gold Hill Grade at the Odd Fellows hail on Thursday, October 27, at 8 p.m xma win oe a costume party and each lady attending is to bnag a pie. Paul Throne, on behalf of the dus drivers, reported on trans portation problems and gave suggestions which would be helri ful in maintaining safety of chil dren while enroute on the school buses. Mrs. Thorne, cafe teria cook, explained the lunch program and invited parents to visit the cafeteria. . Mrs. Lois Stabler's fourth grade and William Brewster's sixth grade tied for room count. During the social hour re freshments were served by' the first grade room mothers, Mrs. Ogden Kellogg, Mrs. Dexter Wil liams, Mrs. Ed Shoemaker and Mrs. Paul Malloy, Parents were Invited at this time to visit a colorful Mexican . art display prepared by Mr. Brewster and his sixth graders.. -4- Tu..d.T.o..b.,. i93,r,,K,r? of Iris attend-Lewis, Dwight Staley, Regent to Visit Medford Chapter Crater Lake chapter, Daugh ters of the American Revolution, will meet Thursday, October 20, at the home of Mrs. A. Newcomers' Club Meets at Hotel; Dance Announced An arrangement . of autumn leaves and chrysanthemums dec orated the dessert table for Thursday's meeting of Sojourn ers club at the Medford hotel. Large, bauquets of pampas grass were used to decorate through out the room. Gum drop trees were the centerpiece for each of the sixteen tables. Guests were Mrs. Ruth Brunk and Mrs. 'Bill Nye. You 11 want to order every design in it! up Students To Give Program on UN About 45 Sixth erade students from Lincoln school will present a program over KBES-TV Wednesday, October 19. from :du until 5 p.m. honoring the tenth anniversary of the United .Nations. The children will pre sent skits, shadowgraphs, and songs honoring the five main countries, England, France, Rus sia, China and the United States. The students will wear cos tumes representing these coun tries. The program will be directed by Mrs. Dean Hohensee, director of music at Lincoln; Miss Anna Laura Honts will have charge of the costumes, and Roy Gil bertson will have charge of the various sets and props. Topic for Club In Central Point Central Point Clean around iris now to prevent rot, Mrs. Kenneth Farley of Kath arine's Gardens, told members of the Central Point Garden club at the last meeting. It is not nec essary to cut back leaves unless moving plants, she said. In speak ing on iris, Mrs. Farley com pared the iris of ancient times in the Nile valley to the some 200 species of today with new colors and ruffling. The meeting was at the home of Mrs. H. E. Conger with Mrs. Edward Jones and Mrs. Everett Young assisting the hostess. Chrysanthemums decorated the trays. During the business meeting conducted by Mrs. R. D. Kay, members answered roll call by telling of tasks in their gardens. An amendment to the club con stitution regarding associate membership was read and dis cussed. It was announced that a plant sale will be held in the spring. Mrs. Ralph Hixson, li brarian, presented several new gardening and arrangement books, available for members' use. Mrs. John Holmer displayed two arrangements, one of red geranium blooms with plum foli age and the other of spider dahlias in a pillow vase with pyracantha berries, and the group discussed their good and bad points. Chrysanthemum corsages as for a football game, after-game party and dance, followed the plans of the corsage committee to feature corsages for various occasions and these went to Mrs. E. Reames, Mrs. Paul Ander son, Mrs. Lloyd Seymour and Mrs. Ted Baker. A corsage kit complete with rulers for the rib bon supplies, was made by Mr. Hixson. It was announced that the second course of the Flower Show school will be held Octo ber 25, 26 and 27 at the Central Point Grange hall. Mrs. C. W Anhorn announced committees for a competitive flower show to be held in July. It was decided to furnish cook ies for the Camp White Birthday party on October 26. Mrs. Roy Stanley asked, that members leave cookies at the home of Mrs, J. E. Vincent, Tuesday October 25. Guests were Mrs. Baker, Mrs C. L. Morehouse and Mrs. Huffine. Prize's went to Mrs Kay and Mrs. Reames. Ruch PTA Announces Carnival Ruch By means of a carnival and "personalized" chairs, Ruch Parent-Teacher association hopes to build a stage and supply chairs for the Ruch school gym nasium. The carnival will be given Saturday, October 29, with Robert Webb, ways and means chairman, in charge. The personalized chairs idea developed when some PTA coun cil members offered to buy their own chairs for the gymnasium. These will be lettered in gold with the donor's name, and a supply of chairs will be kept on hand for others who may wish purchase them. to Post and Auxiliary Aid Shady Cove Couple Shady Cove Members of Shady Cove post, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the auxiliary recently held an old-fashioned wood-gathering party for Mr, and Mrs. Jim CassaL Mrs. Cusal has been ill. Members of the post called on the Cassals, taking saws, axes and trucks and put up a supply of wmter wood for the couple. Entertainment for both young people and adults is being planned, there will be gifts of groceries, and food will be sold. A work day was plan ned for October 22 to set booths 1 1 1 1 - . n ami win oegin ai a a.m. First plans for the carnival were made at the first fall meet ing of the PTA held in the school cafeteria, with Mrs. Harlan Can- trail, vice-president, presiding. George Redhead, safety chair man, had secured two films for the program from Southern Ore gon college. One film, "Be Safe at Home" showed how the sim plest act of carelessness in the nome mignt result in a serious accident. The other, "Safety on the Bus," gave examples of stu dent conduct, both good and bad and how such conduct might hinder the driver in observing safety rules. Fred West, chairman of th- scnooi board, spoke concerning the new gymnasium and class rooms which were open for in spection. He introduced Mr. Lar son, Robert Webb and Ed Fos- sen, members of the board. Mr. West also introduced Boyd Gibson, school principal, who taught last year at Griffin Creek, Mr. (jibson expressed apprecia tion for having on his staff Mrs. Ina R. Pursel and Mrs. Cleo F Shannon, first and second grade teachers- who have taught in the school for a period of years. He stated that Mrs. Lucile Mc- Kemie, who taught part time last year, is teaching fourth and fifth grades and Mrs. Granby, a graduate of Southern . Oregon college, is teaching third grade, commuting daily from Talent, Mr. Throne teaches music and afternoon classes in the seventh and eighth grade and Mr. Nivens teaches sixth grade and coaches athletics. Mr. Gibson complimented Mrs. Elizabeth Vessell, school cook, for the "nourishing and tastv" hot lunches served to the children at a minimum charge of 15 cents per pupiL Mrs. Ves sell has supervised the lunch program and cooked for the school for the past five years. Mrs. Albert Nelson, member ship chairman, announced a con test between the rooms for PTA memberships, with the prize to the room for the largest number. Mrs.' Rachel Rhoades, assist ant 4H leader, will teach a sew ing class on PTA meeting nights to help entertain children. Mov ies will be provided and super vised recreation was discussed. Refreshments were served by the council. - State President Mother's Group To Be Delegate Mrs. Rex Note, 32 Hamilton street, Medford, will attend the national convention of Blue Star Mothers of America to be held October 22-27 in Detroit, Mich. Mrs. Note will leave Friday, Oc tober 21, by United Airlines for the convention city. She is Ore gon department president of the group. Also attending the convention from Oregon will be Mrs. Betty Simon, Grants Pass. Mrs. Note conducted a meet ing of the state board here last Thursday. Luncheon was served at noon, with seven present. At tending were Mrs. Sadie Baker and Mrs. Olga Barnes, ' Rose- burg; Mrs. Edna Crorey, past de partment president,' Mrs. Jose phine Ferris and Mrs. Simon, all of Grants Pass; and Mrs. Helen Watson, Medford. Mistletoe club held the last meeting at the home of Mrs. Elsa Walker. Dessert was served by Mrs. Keith Pace, Mrs. George Culy and Mrs. Joe Kingsley. Mrs. Carl Pearson, the. presi dent, conducted a business ses sion. . Plans were made for a "country store" which will be held this fall at the Pythian building. Club members accepted an in vitation from Central ' Point Royal Neighbors of America to attend a dessert luncheon No vember 9 at 1 p.m. in the Grange hall. Club members were also re minded of a coming rummage sale. . Before the meeting closed, Mrs. David Fraysher became a member of the club. Next meeting of the group i will be a covered dish dinner I October 26. 1 Retired Teachers Hear SOC Head Dr. Elmo Stevenson, president of Southern Oregon college, spoke for the last meeting of Jackson County Retired Teach ers. The meeting was held in the Civic Club building, Ashland. The Ashland members were hostesses, and served refresh ments. - The constitution and bylaws were adopted. Formation of a state organiza tion was discussed and a group planned to attend a meeting in Roseburg where such an organi zation was to be discussed.
