    Towne Beats
Milo Savage
In 10 Rounds
New York (U.R) Middle
weight Artie Towne of New
York blamed himself today for
"waiting too long to get a knock
out opeping" in Monday night's
lack-lustre television victory
over sixth-ranking Milo Savage
of Salt Lake City at St. Nicholas
Arena.
"I'll do a hundred per cent
better the next time," promised
the brawny ring veteran who
won a 10-round split decision
over Savage bythe scanty mar
gin of a single point.
Cult Loos
To earn ' that margin Towne
cut loose in the 10th round of
the dull bout and staggered Sav
age with a right to the chin, and
then inflicted a 12-stitch gash on
Milo's right brow in the barrage
that followed.
The close win over contender
Savage pably gained Towne
a berth among the top ten as
nirants for the 160-pound crown,
but it brought him no immed
iate offers of fights.
Artie, a last-minute favorite
at 6 to 5, weighed 161 pounds
to Savage's 159 as he regis
tered his first New York victory
on the comeback Jrail and his
eighth win in nine fights since
he returned to the ring early
this year after three years' retire
ment. Use Tribune Want Ads

Giants Hire
Walters As
Mound Coach
By MILTON RICHMAN
United Press Sports Writer
Bucky Walters, who switched
from third base to the pitching
mound with tremendous success,
switched again today from the
Milwaukee Braves to the New
York Giants.
The 46-year-old Walters was
hired as pitching coach of the
Giants at the personal request
of new Manager Bill Rigney.
Walters, a coach with the
Braves since 1950, was acquired
by the Giants after owner Hor
ace Stoneham obtained permis
sion from Milwaukee to nego
tiate with the former Cincinnati
hurler.
Started in 1931
Walters, who broke into the
majors as a third baseman with
the Braves in 1931, then was
converted into a pitcher while
with the Phillies in 1934, reach
ed his greatest success as a hurl
er with the Reds. He won a total
of 198 games and was named
manager of Cincinnati in Aug.,
1948. He was fired after the
Reds wound up seventh in 1949.
Walters will serve as Rigney's
advisor on pitchers, taking over
a job that Frank Shellenback
had under Leo Durocher last
year. He is the first Giant coach
appointed under Rigney's new
regime. Second baseman Davy
Williams was signed as a Giant
coach for 1956 during the past
season when it was learned he
may not be able to play again.
One more Giant coach will be
selected.
Milwaukee Announces
Changes In Coaching
Milwaukee (U.R) The Mil
waukee Braves have announced
a coaching staff shakeup which
sends Bucky Walters to the New
York Giants and Johnny Cooney
shopping.
General Manager John, Quinn
said Walters, pitching coach for
the Braves the past three years,
would join the Giants in a sim
ilar capacity. He said Cooney
was told of his release at this
time to give him an opportunity
to line up another post. .
