On The Side By E. V. Durling (DttrrflHitad by Kmf Nafcww SynditJU. Inc.) How many times did you pro pose to the charming young woman who gambled her happi ness on accepting you as a mat rimonial mate? Did she snap you up at the first asking? Was your proposal romantic? How about her speech of acceptance? Wom en constantly complain that men's proposals lack the roman tic touch. Some of the answers Of acceptance are not so roman tic. I know of a case in which the young man, his voice packed with emotion asked: "Will you marry me?" And the girl.said: "Yes, I guess so." That reply nearly shattered the romance. Speaking of proposals, last night I saw a film titled "Svengali," based on Du Maurier's novel "Trilby." In the film Trilby ac cepts the first proposal of mar riage little Billee makes to her. In the novel Trilby refused 19 proposals of marriage made by Billee but said "yes" to the 20th. Tall Girls " . The majority of French wom en jure petite. However, the ma jority of French men prefer tall women. Pierre Louis-Guerin, who operates the highly suc cessful Paris cabarets, the Lido, Bal Tabarin and Moulin Rouge, caters to the French male's pref erence for the statuesque sirens. Monsieur Louis-Guerin will not hire a show girl who is less than fiv feet ten inches in height. Practically all his show girls are American, English or Scandi navian. Accordions Lawrence Welk, the conscien tiously cheerful band maestro, has an accordion for which he paid $5,000. Speaking of accor dions reminds me of one of my favorite vaudeville acts. That was Phil Baker, the accordion player, who was billed as, "a bad boy from a good family." Phil's partner, who heckled him from a box seat, was Sid Silvers. A couple of very clever fellows. Passing By Lester Sweetland, erstwhile major leaguer, another good ballplayer born under the sign of Leo. Lester has a charming wife named Blossom. She and Blos som Seeley are the only two peo ple I know of having that first name. os Names - Some State of Washington par ents gaVe each of their 11 chil dren names beginning with "L." HUSBAND SHOULD LIMIT WEDDING EXPENSE OFFER It is always easy to spend oth er people's money, but this is not fair. mm (Q) "My hus band is di vorced 'man. His f o r m r wife remarried and their daughter lives with htr, but comas to sea my hush and whenever she Dr. Hnxlock can. She is now 23 years old and is planning to be married soon. She would like a nice wedding. Is it the father's place to accept all expenses? I think the mother should help pay them as most of the guests will be their friends. Should I attend the wedding, or would this cause an embarrassing situ ation?" Mrs. F. H. (A) I think your husband should decide how much he thinks he can afford to pay for his daughter's wedding, and give her this to use as she wishes. If it is not enough, then it would be up to her mother and step father to provide the rest.. Under no conditions .should your husband underwrite what ever type of wedding his first wife wants, or he may find him self with bills that will literally bankrupt him.- By setting a limit to what he will pay, he safe guards himself. Your husband is no longer legally responsible for the sup port of his daughter. However, he certainly will want her to have a wedding that he can rea sonably afford to give. He must also remember that there will be a present in addition to the wed ding expenses. As the. daughter has been in your home, I think she would be hurt if you did not attend the wedding. After the ceremony, your husband will be glad to have you with him as he would feel somewhat out of things when his former wife's husband acts as host. (Copyright 1955, General Features Corp.) BABY HAS HEAD START : Van Nuys, Calif. U.R) Chrifr tine Lee Brauer, third child of Mrs. Leroy Brauer, was born Sunday with, a head start on most babies. She already has two front teeth. ! Wife Streamlining Chicagoan who is trying to streamline a wife with a 30-inch waist asks for suggestions of waist reduction exercises besides scrubbing floors. Have her skip rope about 50 times daily. Chop ping wood is also a great weight reducer. Shoveling snow off the sidewalk is also very effective. Please Note What's the world's finest and most' expensive automobile? I thought it was the Rolls-Royce. Now I am informed by an expert on the subject that it is the Mer cedes, manufactured'in Stuttgart, Germany. Some Mercedes mod els are priced as high as $20,000. Though these are regular stock cars, not racing models, their speed is said to be 170 miles per hour. DIM VIEW Clement Attlee, head of Great Britain's Labor Party, seems to be taking dim view of proceedings during session of annual party con ference at Margate. During meeting, practical politicians of party defeated resolution that would have committed them to support Moscow's policy on Germany and at Geneva conferences this month. That's what it says on sign in a very fancy grocery store on the Avenue of the Americas, Manhattan. How about these Col orado peaches? Are they a threat to Georgia peaches? . . . The treatment of rheumatism and ar thritis by bee stings is by no means a new idea. The personal physician of Francis Joseph I of Austria was a specialist in this type of treament. Growing Hair Continued to be reported are curious ways in which hair has been alleged to made grow on bald or partially bald heads. A British barber had a partially bald scientist for a customer. The scientist suddenly began to grow hair. The barber asked how it was done. The scientist said he took pills designed to improve the feathers of prize poultry! Cousins Here's something perhaps even Brooklyn can't top. A Detroiter says he has 142 living cousins! His family has organized a "Cousin Club" which meets monthly. He says they have lots of fun. No doubt. But how about Christmas? I mean buying pres ents for 142 cousins must be quite a strain on the bankroll. Also, consider the weddings. In itself buying wedding presents for the cousins could bankrupt a man. Let's not even think of the birthday presents. Mbttdar.
