County Children
Receive Help From
Boys, Girls Aid
(Editor's Not: This ! an
other in a serin of brief arti
cles describing the agencies
which benefit from the United
Medford Crusade fund drive,
now under way. Material is
supplied by the agencies themselves.)
Mem
Eighteen Jackson county chil
dren received 3,123 days care
through the Boys and Girls Aid
Society of Oregon during 1954,
according to figures released by
Stuart R. Stimmel, state direc
tor, to M. M. Huggins, chairman !
of United Medford Crusade. The
Society served 1,002 children
and unmarried mothers last
year.
Stimmel pointed out that in
terms of human needs, this
means that a great many chil
dren who have suffered perma
nent or temporary loss of their
own homes, were cared for in
good foster homes supervised by
the society, until they returned
to their parents or were placed
for adoption.
The 163 babies and older chil
dren placed for adoption by the
society in 1954 was the largest
number ever placed by any
agency in Oregon. It represented
an increase of 16 per cent over
the previous year, and the chil
dren were placed in 31 counties
throughout the state. Forty-five
of the children were under one
month of age, and 20 were from
6 to 16 years old. Seventeen be
longed to seven groups of broth
ers and sisters placed together.
Children of all races are placed
by the Society, and applications
from couples interested in adopt
ing are always welcome. Aver
age wait by those receiving chil
dren in 1954 was less than eight
months.
Unmarried mothers aided by
the Society numbered 340, 168
of whom were under 21 years of
age. The service Included med
ical care, living arrangements
and skilled counseling. The soci
ety's new educational program
of high school subjects is now
available to unmarried expectant
mothers who have not completed
their schooling. Courses will be
given at the society's headquar
ters, 2301 Glisan st.,' In Port
land. The Boys and Girls Aid soci
ety of Oregon is a member agen
cy of United Medford Crusade
and of Community Chests and
United Funds throughout the
state. Medford is the only com
munity in the state in which a
branch office of the society is
located. To insure the welfare of
Jackson county children who
need help, Allen H. Hatch, super
visor of the local branch office,
urges the people of this com
munity to give generously to the
United Medford Crusade.

ACTING UP
Fort Pierre, S. D. The Bad
-River has been just that recent
ly. For the fourth time the
river washed out a temporary
culvert here, thus impeding work
on a bridge that crosses the Bad
River on U. S. 83, in the town
of Fort Pierre.
