Doctors in emergency ward had given two-year-old Kim up for dead when a chest surgeon, waiting to operate on another patient, happened to walk in. The surgeon, Dr. John E. Summers, noted. the boy's condition and made an which had stopped, beating. He beating again. Kim had choked on an unidentified object. He is now reported "coming along nicely." SCIENCE AT WORK New York (U.R) Not only can geniuses bediscovered among children some children can be "made" geniuses. Having startled with that sug gestion, Dr. Sidney L. Pressey, professor of psychology at Ohio State University, went on 'to say that we ought to be making more and more geniuses because "in the present international tug of war, survival itself' may de pend on it. Our trouble now is that we think of genius only as 'superior abilities" which are in-born, he said. But there is another side to it, and this is the "nurture" of those superior abilities. If they are to grow and come to fruition, they have to be fed properly right from the start say, from the ages of three or four years and encouraged to develop as fast as they will. Pressey was critical of "a gen eral belief, fostered in this coun try by most child psychologists and 'progressive' educators dur ing the past. 25 years, that intel lectual precocity is somehow not quite healthy, is almost al ways a hazard to good social adjustment, and should be slow ed down rather than facilitated." Coach for Geniuses Why, it's reached the point where "in the home, the early- reading precocious child causes anxiety" and this despite "such childhood precocity having been the usual rather than the un usual thing among adults con sidered intellectually brilliant and those who become famous in intellectual pursuits, said Pres sey. Let's "nurture" precocious chil dren, then, he suggested let's try to make sure they grow up into "practicing geniuses." The nurturing should consist of "early encouragement, intensive instruction," new and greater opportunities as the children ad vance, an unfailingly agreeable, harmonious, and stimulating so cial life for them, and accumu lating experiences with the stim ulation of success. Pressey would have in every school system and in every sec ondary school and college a per son to discover and encourage genius. He wouldn't becalled "personal specialist for superior students" because that might embarrass the children he se lected and irk the parents of the children he didn't. But that's what he would be, actually, and he could be given some such meaningless title as "cor-ordi-nator of special programs." In colleges this person "might even follow . reports on high school science fairs and the like and recruit . promising young sters for his college in the man ner of a football coach." In the secondary school, he "would try to keep the elementary schools alert to discover especially bright children there." Change Early Training "If such guidance or person nel specialists for the most able were generally available in col leges and high sehools or public school systems," he continued, "it is believed that they could greatly increase the number of young people going into ad vanced training, select them bet ter, and greatly improve the effectiveness of their education." But this would not be enough. The precocious child should be permitted t6 move through his schooling at whatever pace he can maintain, and he should begin his schooling at whatever age he is able to begin it, Pres sey doubted that "acceleration" of children in school was bad, and he cited examples where it had been good. What he would do would be to adopt "better methods," such as: : "Admission to the first grade on the basis of readiness for school rather than chronological age. Replacement of the first three grades by a 'primary pool immediate incision over his heart massaged the heart until it began By DELOS SMITH . United Press Science Editor out of which children would move early or late, depending on when they finish primary work, rapid-progress sections do ing three years' work in two in junior and senior high school, and credit by examination in college." This "should permist ' each youngster to move through edu cational programs at his own pace, without being conspicuous if his rate is not that of the average," he added. Pressey set forth his views in The Scientific Monthly, an organ. of the American Associa tion for the Advancement of Science. News Of Books From the Library "Band of Angels" by Robert Penn Warren is a newcomer to the lists. It is the story of Amantha Starr, whose fate it was to be raised as a young lady of a Kentucky plantation and then sold down, the river as a slave in New Orleans. Sensation Abroad A novel that has already created a sensation abroad before its translation into English is Francoise Sagan Quorrez's "Bon- jour Tristesse." Not for conser vative tastes is this story written by an 18-year-old French student of the unconventional summer holiday of one of her contem poraries. Morton Thompson's "Not As A Stranger" is another old-timer on the lists, one of the ever popular stories of the medical world Frank Slaughter's "Flight from Natchez" has also been pre viously described here, being a story of a doctor who has met disaster and is forced to flee mis city. "The Genius and the God dess," tenth and latest novel of Aldous Huxley, one of the lead ing satirists of our time, again takes up his theme of conflict between the human intellect and the human spirit. Gold Rush Story California in gold rush days is the exciting setting of Frank Yerby's "The Treasure of Pleas ant Valley." Budd Schulberg presents for us the "Waterfront," with slum dwellers emerging as unforgettable characters re sponding to a violent challenge. The book is an expansion of the prize-winning movie, "On the Waterfront." Your public library orders books of this type before they are published. They are deliver ed as soon as possible after west coast jobbers receive them from the publishers, and are usually ready, for circulation within 48 hours after delivery.
