TWO MEDTORD (ORECOJT) MAIL TRIBUNE Howard District Extension Group To Meet Thursday Howard Howard Extension Unit will hold the first regular meeting of fall Thursday, Oc- tober 13 from 10:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in Harmony i hall of the Friend's church,. 2525 Merriman road. Mrs. Verl Walker and Mrs. Chester Peterson will give the first "aye-opener" lesson in "Pretty and Practical Gift Wrap ping" promptly at 10:30 a.m. The first of two lessons in "Basket Weaving" will be given by Mrs. Henry Friesen and Mrs. M. J. Swing. Project leaders re quest those participating to bring an ice pick or steel knitting needle, flat pan, sponge, towel and old newspapers. These projects will be con tinued at the November 10 meet ing of the unit, and members are asked to plan to attend both meetings so they may receive the full benefit from the lessons. Child care will be available at the home of Mrs. Malcolm McCarty, 2618 Table Rock road. Children are to take their lunches and a sturdy toy. Mrs. E. M. Gleason and Mrs. L. R. Bailey will be co-hostesses. Also helping with the noon luncheon will be Mrs. Paul Rob ertson, Mrs. H. E. Peyton, Mrs. E. A. Walton, Mrs. Robert Otto man, Mrs. W. H. Seibert arid Mrs. Friesen. At the organizational meet ing of Howard unit held Septem- Peterson, 2584 Bullock road, the unit chairman, Mrs. Gleason, an nounced the appointment of the following committees for this year: Luncheon, e Mrs. Robert Ottoman; 4-H club, Mrs. Verl Walker; publicity, Mrs. John Benson; finance, Mrs. Albert Stocks; research, Mrs. Paul Rob ertson. Other committees will be named at the Thursday meet ing. Society Elects New President Plan Field Trip Southern Oregon Mycological society elected Bill Isaacs, a Med ford Senior high school student, chairman of the group during a meeting last week at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Lawrence. Young Isaacs replaces Richard Bartus, Shady Cove, who will be unable to attend meetings reg ularly because of health reasons and other commitments, officers announced. The recent meeting was the first in some 'time because of the dryness of the summer sea son. A field trip has been planned for Sunday, October 23, and any one interested may attend. A sack lunch will be needed and those who want to inquire fur ther may call Fred Lawrence, telephone 2-6767. A potluck dinner is planned for the next meeting, Novem ber 2, at 7:30 p.m. at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Bartus at Shady Cove. Tentative plans for a mush room show the latter part of No vember is being discussed but will depend on weather condi tions, those in charge point out. The members voted for the local group to join with the American society. It is the purpose of the society to study fungi which are -edible and those that-are not, for non-commercial purposes. Also the group fs securing the latest literature on the subject for the local library to assist others in identification , of mushrooms. Anyone interested in the group is invited to attend the society's meetings held the first Wednes day of each month. Job's Daughters Plan Initiation Candidates will be initiated at a meeting of Bethel 55, Order of Job's Daughters, when the beth el meets Wednesday, October 12, in the Pythicn building, Queen Sheila Spence will preside and three candidates will be wel comed into the order. Parents of. all members and persons with proper Masonic af filiation are invited to attend the initiation ceremonies. Senator To Speak Wayne Morse, senior senator from Oregon, who . will deliver a non-partisan speech "" on the United Nations Friday, October 14, will be the first of a series of speakers to appear before the local UN chapter this season ac cording to Bruce Manley, chair man of the chapter. Senator Morse will speak at Medford High school at 8 p.m. The United Nations will cele brate its tenth anniversary on October 24 and through the se ries of speakers the Medford UN chapter hopes to familiarize the people of Jackson county with the past accomplishments and future aims of the organization, Manley pointed out. As the speech is considered in the light of a public service, there will be no admission charge of any kind for the Fri day night appearance of Sena tor Morse, Mr. Manley states. . Medford Altrusans To Meet Thursday Altrusa club of Medford will hold a dinner meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday, October 13 "at the Eaton Dinner house on North Crater Lake avenue. Miss Myrta Otterdale and Mrs. Maude Codding are hostesses for this evening and other meetings in October. Mrs. Edith Baker, internation al relations chairman, will pre sent the grants in aid project which is International Altrusa's contribution to the advance edu cation of Latin American and Asiatic women. Mrs. George Flannagan will show pictures she and Mr. Flan agan took in Europe recently and will describe their experiences as guests of German families. This will be an all day affair. Ed Kreutzer of Memorials Arts in Portland spent last week end at the Carl Hoskins resi dence. Hoskins and Albert Hack erts and he went deer hunting but had no luck. Miss Judy Winningham, daugh ter of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Win ningham, returned last Sunday after several days visiting in Portland with her cousins. Mr. and Mrs. Roger Keener and three children, Dicky, Ter ry and Scotty, left- for home at El Monte, Calif., after spend ing the last three weeks with Mrs. Keener's parents, Mr. and Mrs. D. E. Serry. Mrs. Serry and her sister, Mrs. John Hatch, Hot Springs, S. D., visited this week in Youcolla, Ore., and at Eugene. They also spent a few days visiting in Springfield" at the home of their brother and family. While there Mrs. Serry was able to have a short visit with an old school friend, Mrs, Duncun, Drain, who came and sent the day with them at Springfield, Mrs. E. O. Graham, Mrs. Quin- tin Jordon and Mrs. Byron San ford jointly honored Mrs. Rich ard Souza with a baby shower given last Wednesday evening at the IOOF hall in Jacksonville. About 45 guests were present and traditional stork shower games Were played. Many gifts were presented for the expected baby, ' Carl S. Hoskins returned Fri day night after a two day trip to Blackfoot, Ida., to see his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Hoskins.' ' The entire community ex tends its sympathy to the Floyd Pence family and his ,wife Cap itola, all long time residents of Jacksonville. Mr. Pence died of injuries received in an automo bile accident last week. Commit tal was in Jacksonville cemetery Saturday. Harold Purcell, son of Mrs Ida Wright, is in the Sacred Heart hospital this week for medical attention. DRUG Meeting Schedule To Be Resumed By DAV Auxiliary jacKson county unit No. 8, Disabled American Veterans aux iliary, will return to the regu lar schedule of meeting , begin ning Tuesday, October 11. The unit will meet in the DAV build ing at 1515 North Riverside ave nue and will be served pumpkin pie and cider by the DAV chap ter at a joint social gathering following the business meetings. A heavy schedule of activities is on the agenda of this organi zation for the fall and winter months, it is stated, and much of the program will be outlined at the Tuesday night session.
