Around Hollywood By ALINE MOSEY United Preu Correspondent Hollywood (U.PJ Arlene Dahl, delicate and lady-like in hoop-skirts for eight years, has turned rebel The beauty announced to day she wants wants to be a beast. Arlene has been tab bed "one of Hoi lywood's most beautiful w o m e n," a Aline Mosby title she does not explore. But for a movie role she at last has the chance to cut off her red hair, wipe off 4he make-up and play a prison Inmate in drab clothes. And on top of turning unglamorously dramatic, she's pulled another switch and posed for her first cheesecake photos in a brief bathing suit. "I never posed in a bathing suit before and maybe that's why they put me in hoopskirts," sighed Arlene. Never Had Chance I never had a chance for a really dramatic role, either. always wore beautiful clothes and just walked through pic tures. I looked too lady-like. "Wall T'o Vnfo4 T want to pfay a dipsomaniac and give (Gloria Grahame a little compe tition. This current role, is my first big break. No make-up, straight hair. I lost weight and lowered my voice. I've lost more roles because I didn't have a Brooklyn accent!" During the last year, Arlene stuck to her guns and watched "the lady-like roles I turned down to other actresses." Final ly she got a chance for an un- glamorous role opposite Rhonda Fleming in "Slightly Scarlet." "I want more dramatic roles," she said. "If people don't like this picture, IH be back in hoop- lyto .-? m- i r 11 mi inr1 nt i skirts. n I visited Arlene at her Bel Air home (done in gray, to set off hp red hair) for a look at the "new" Dahl. Before, Arlene admits, "People thought Rhonda and. I looked alike. Now, m short hair and then bangs, Ar lene looks to me like a young Jeanette MacDonald. Loses Plum Role , The strenuous dramatics of , "Slightly Scarlet" nearly cost Arlene her life. She collapsed with anemia at the end ' of the picture, and had to give up a plum role in "War and Peace" to Anita Ekberg. But Arlene takes the bad luck cheerfully. In fact, she also laughs (in a lady-like way) over reports she and Rhonda - had a lively feud during filming of "Slightly Scarlet." She insists publicists for . the picture "(teamed up the ffeud and Rhonda and I just laughed over it." ' ....... 'Nonetheless, it's interesting to . hear one actress talk about an other. - "The " producer wouldn't let us see the rushes. He thought . if one had more close-ups than the other . . ." she said, and ; laughed again. She sipped some tea and went on, "Rhonda looks like a mil lion dollars in this picture. I ' look like something the cat had dragged in. '.'But then, I've had all that glamour. She can have it!" Tall Tribe Booth said the Tuaregs had no need of 'such artifice, because most Tuareg men are well over six feet tall. The Tuaregs wear white turbans. There are two theories about the origin of the tribe, now a dying matriarchy. One is that the Tuaregs were descended from a lost Roman Legion. The other is that they are descend ants of a band of Crusaders, cut off from returning to Europe by the fall of Tunis. "The Tuaregs carry, huge, double-edged swords, similar to f Monday, October 10. 1955 those . used by the Crusaders," Booth said.
