Fire Prevention Week started as a one-day observance Oct. 9, 1911, when the Fire Marshals association of North America suggested the 40th anniversary of the great Chicago Fire of 1871 be set aside to publicize fire prevention. President Woodrow Wilson in 1920 issued the first National Fire Prevention Day proclama tion, and two years later the en tire ' week of Oct. 9 was pro claimed as Fire Prevention Week by President Warren G. Harding, who urged prevention be observed by "every man, woman and child, not only dur ing the week designated, but throughout every hour of every day of the year.!'
