SIXTEEN MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE Sunday, October 9, 1955 Around Hollywood JUiaeHotbr Bv ALINE MOSBY United Press Correspondent Hollywood (U.R) Mike Lane can call himself the biggest actor in town today, not because he s won any Oscars, but be cause he tow ers six feet, nine inches into the Holly wood smog. Mike, a 24 year old wres tler, is Movie town's male Cinderella of the year, in a giant-size package.' He's never acted a day in his life, but his size brought him a top role in one of the most important movies of the year, "The Harder They Fall." The wrestler will co-star with Humphrey Bogart a sort of 0 Mutt-and-Jeff combination in the film that will "expose" box ing the way "On the Waterfront" dissected unions. Both movies were written by Budd Shulberg and made at Columbia Studio. Plays Boxer Role B r a w n y, 275-pound Lane snared the part of the boxer which most guess-who readers of the hovel figured was patterned after Primo Camera. Lane is taking his controvert sial role very calmly. "I am confident I can do the part," he said. "I never had any trouble with anything else in my life. If other roles come along, I'd like to stay here." Lane was uncovered by the studio talent search for an unknown (and this time they meant it) to "fill a pair of size 18 shoes." Talent scout Max Antony combed "tip-topper" clubs, cir cuses ofind college sports in 15 cities before finding Mike wrestling In Houston, Tex. Mike's shoes are size 12, but he won the job, anyway. I found the new actor getting into shape in the studio gym. If .you clisftb on a ladder, you can see he is dark-haired, good look ing and wearing measurements of 52-36-44. Born in Philadelphia Mike hails from Philadelphia, but his parents live now in Clay ton, N.J. "I never liked school," Mike said. "I felt the teachers picked on me. . I was so big they would ' catch me at everything. "After high school, I took up wrestling in a circus. My par .ents weren't too happy. After two years I figured I was good enough to go on my own and I've been a professional wrestler for four years." Mike is a soft-spoken, has nice manners and eats three average meals a day, usually steak. He's not worried about being in a movie that pokes boxing. "I don't like boxing, either," he confessed. "Boxing is deterio rating to the body. Wrestling is body-building. And it's no fake. You don't get these scars and cauliflower ears from 'acting' in the ring." During early development of the . (International) ROGUE RIVER Navyman Returns to Ship Rogue River Robert Brown of West Evans Creek rd. left Wednesday for San Francisco to report for duty on his ship after several weeks stay at his ranch. Mr. and Mrs. Brown made their home in San Francisco be fore purchasing a ranch in Evans Valley. Miss Audrey Brown, their daughter, has been vaca tioning in Germany, Switzerland and Austria since June.' With a friend who lives in Germany, she toured the country on a bi cycle. According to Mrs. Brown, Audrey will sail for New York Oct. 5 and return from there to San Francisco by plane. Oct. 19 is the j tentative opening date. j Jean Chapman, manager of Pine Villa Trailer Sales, is in Josephine General hospital in Grants Pass where-he was taken Saturday by ambulance from his home on Highway 99 North. He is suffering from severe pleurisy and complications. His condition is slightly improved today. Junior Library Head To Take Annua Leave The junior department of the Medf ord Public library will not be open on Tuesday evenings during the four-week period from Oct. 17 to Nov. 12, while Mrs. Nora McKay, department head. is on annual vacation. Parentsjurday, when the library opens at and teachers wishing to confer with Mrs. McKay are advised to visit the library this week, the library announcement said. Daytime schedules foe the de partment will remain as usual with opening hours from noon tcJ 5:30 p.m. every day except Sat-' 10 a.m. During Mrs. McKay's vacation Mrs. Florence Perkey will be in charge ol the junior department, with the assistance of Misses Cynthia Hunt, Mary Fredenburg and Ruth Phillips.
