Hit A Happy Medium In Choosing A Mate When two people are too much alike, they do not usually get along well because one is unable 'VJ"4 to supply the other witn m- terests. Too great a dissim ilarity, on the other hand, is likely to lead to clashes and feelings of in- adequa c y on the part of one Dr. Hezlock or both. How to hit' the happy medium is the problem faced by the young man who writes: (Q) "I am and always hare been a rather bashful fellow. am 26 years old, working in a strange city far away from ' home, and I get Tery lonely. I hare a good Job and am in a posi tion to get married. But, my problem is 16 find the right kind of girl. I have been going out with a young woman,, several years younger than I, who is as bashful as I am. When we are together, there are long periods of silence when neither of us can think of anything to say. I am sure that if I tried, to make love to her, she would freeze up as she never feels relaxed and at ease when we are alone together. "L have also been going out occasionally with a young wom an from my office who is just the opposite. She has all the nerve in the world and is per fectly self-confident. However, when I am ,wiih her, she makes me feel like a helpless child and I rather resent her self-confidence. I suppose this is just be cause I envy her. Would either make a good wife for me?" R.B. (A) No, you are not likely to find happiness with either one of the two young women. The bash ful one is too much like you to be really congenial. She is afraid of herself just as you are afraid of ydtarself. When you are to gether, you are likely to find .that the bashfulness of one will exaggerate the bashfulness of the other. On the other hand, you cer tainly could never be. happy with a woman who constantly made you feel inadequate and inferior. Realizing that you are bashful and timid, she would lead you . around by the nose and make you feel like a helpless child,: as she has already done. . If you resent this now, think , how much more you would re- sent it if you were faced with it day after day, year after year. What you should do is try to find' someone who strikes the happy medium between these two young women. Find some one who hamore self-confidence than you, but who uses it to build up your self-confidence, not tear it down. By doing this, she would gradually build up a sense of confidence in you that would make you more like her, without antagonizing you in the process. (COPYRIGHT 1955, GENERAL FEATURES CORP.) Friday, October 7, 1955 MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE THREB Unclassified Employees Due Same Vacations Salem (U.R) State employees and officers in unclassified serv ice are entitled to the same vaca tion privileges as personnel in classified civil service, accord ing to Attorney General Robert Y. Thornton. Resignation of George Spaur as state forester to take a post in Pakistan furnished the first oc casion' for ruling on an act passed by the 1955 Legislature, Thornton said. Question Raised Spaur presented a voucher for compensation due him for 200 hours "annual leave with pay," representing vacation not taken. The question was raised by ac countants in the secretary of state's office as to legality of making cash payment to Spaur in lieu of vacation, on the basis that the salary of the state for ester is fixed by law. Vacaiioni Authorized But Thornton ruled that the 1955 act authorizes vacations for unclassified officers and em ployees without regard to the manner in which their regular Liquor Privilege Revenues Distributed Salem (U.R) Liquor privilege tax revenues totaling $275,000 for the quarter ended Sept. 30 have been distributed to Oregon counties, according to Secretary of State Earl T. Newbry. The funds are distributed 75 per cent to the counties and 25 per cent to ' the state general fund, with the provision that the counties spend the money for old-age pensions, mothers' aid and direct relief of the indigent. compensation is authorized. Reference in the 1955 act to "salaries fixed by law," Thorn ton said, is limited to the require ment for establishing a pay plan, comparable to .the general state pay structure, for unclassified employees and officer? whose compensation is not fixed by law.
