Some of the peaks are already snow capped and glisten white in the early morning sun. The view from the President's own room also is Impressive. It is more to the south and doesn't ' include the majestic sweep of the main range. But on clear days he can see Pike's Peak tow ering above the lower Rockies 60 miles away. Adams walks to work from his quarters a few blocks away and arrives shortly after 7 a.m., the time the President usually showed up before his heart at tack. As the stern-faced former New Hampshire governor .approached the headquarters building the first morning, the two air police men on duty at the front door didn't know whether to salute Adams or not. One did and the other didn't. They soon found out that Adams does not rate a salute, although the President always does as commanded-in-chief of the armed forces. A quiz book with which Mr. Eisenhower whiled away a cou ple of hours the other day appar ently is one which costs 25 cents in the Fitzsimons post exchange. It's entitled "The $64,000 Ques tion." One category of questions is "A man named Sam." It includes this one: "A man named Sam once received a ma jority of the popular vote for President of the United States but nevertheless was not elected to the office. Give the full name of the man, the name of the op ponent who was elected, and the date of the election." The answer is Samuel J. Til den, a Democrat, who was de feated by Republican Rutherford B. Hayes in the bitterly con tested election of 1876. However, Mr. Eisenhower's attendants would not reveal whether he tried that question, or, if so, how he fared. At his first press conference after the Dodgers won the final game, Hagerty opened by saying he had an "important announce ment" before reading the latest medical bulletin on President Eisenhower's condition. As reporters perked up, Hag erty declared: "The Dodgers should be bro ken up, and wait until next year." Mr. Eisenhower didn't listen to the Series, for there is no radio in his room. However, Hag erty said, the President kept in touch each day with the outcome of the game. He didn't say where the President's sympathies lay. Test of Strength Boring To Elephant Kewaunee, Wis (U.R) It was strictly no contest and the elephant's bored manner made that evident. A test of strength between an elephant and a farm tractor was held during a circus performance here, intended to prove the ma Chine was stronger than the an imal. The animal was harnessed, the tractor hooked on and the con testants aimed in opposite direc tions. The tractor came to an abrupt stop when the connect ing chain became taut. The ele phant indicated no strain as the tractor wheels burrowed into the ground. A . new start was ordered to get the tractor wheels out of the hole. The elephant flexed and stood fast. The tractor jerked to a stop and began digging again. The contest was declared ended. The elephant ambled out of the ring munching on straw and obviously rather bored with the whole business. Search Conducted for Constitution Signer Washington 0J.R) One of the signers of the Constitution is ''missing," and a nation-wide search is on to find him. The National Society, Daugh ters of the American Revolution, is turning attics upside- down to find a portrait of Thomas FitzSimons, an Irish-born immi grant, who played an important role in securing liberty for Am erica. Historians know what he did but they don't know what he looked like. One man has described Fitz Simons as "a man of command ing figure, agreeable manners, though somewhat stately and re served." He was a member of the Com mittee of Correspondence in 1774. And he was an officer in Washington's army the night the ice-caked Delaware river was crossed. FitzSimons became a delegate from Pennsylvania to the Con stiutional convention in 1786. He also helped to finance the rev olution itself and later was ac tive in civic affairs in Philadel phia. If you find an unidentified pic ture in the attic of a gentleman of the Revolutionary War per iod, contact the DAR here for it might be a portrait of- Fitz Simons. There are also many younger people who would welcome someone of this type in their homes. That is true of the young woman who writes: (Q) "I hare four children, lwo of whom go to school. The two younger children are at home My husband is just starting a new business and needs my help. I help him whenever X can, but it means leaving the two young er children alone at home Dr. Her lock and this wor ries me. I would like to find some woman who wants a nice home and who would be willing to keep an eye on the children while I am out of the house. I could not pay her now but I would expect to after my hus band's business gels started. sne could have her own room, watch TV when she wanted, have her meals with us. and go io church or the movies wnenever i am at home. I am sure there must be someone who would be glad to have compan ionship and a home but I don't know where to find such a per son. We are easy to get along with and I am sure she would be happy with us." Mrs. E. I suggest that you discuss this matter with your minister and see if he knows of someone who would fit into your family and be happy with you. Don't Leave Them Alone It is certainly not right to leave two young children alone in the hduse. So many things can happen to young children and you would never forgive yourself if this happened to your children. On the other hand, if your husband needs your help to start a new business, you naturally do not want to fail him. It should not be necessary, as you offer so much in return for a small amount of time on the other per son's part. (COPYRIGHT 1955. GENERAL FEATURE CORP.)
