Knight Rebuked ffor Announcing plan To Control delegation Thursday, October 1, 1953 MEDrORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE ELEVEN FAURE FIRES 4 REBELLIOUS CABINET MEMBERS; REGIME TOTTERS Paris CU.R) Premier Ed gar Faure today fired four of his rebellious cabinet ministers whose threatened walkout over his North African policies jeo pardized his tottering coalition government. The four ministers were Re publican Socialists, political heirs of Gen. Charles de Gaulle. They had threatened to resign in hopes of forcing a new gov ernment on France. 'An official government spokes man said the harassed Premier fired the four mutinous Cabin et members including Minister of Defense Pierre Koenig a long time opponent of Faure's Afri can policies. The Gaullists main tained the ministers had resign ed. The Premier swung into ac tion against the Gaullists as the right wing group mounted a de termined offensive to pull down his loosely-knit coalition and re place it by a broad "public sal vation" government such as rul ed France during the 1789 rev olution. . Jacques Chaban-Delmas, pres ident of the Gaullist -movement, made a thinly vieled call for Gen. Charles de Gaulle's return to public life when he said that "our only objective now is the formation of a public salvation cabinet headed by an unchal lenged national authority." A "public salvation" cabinet would be like the one that ruled after the French revolution of 1789 when Republican Franc was attacked on all sides by loy alist Europe. . France was rapidly running into its worst governmental cris is since the fall of Dien Bien Phu and there was growing belief Faure's eight-month-old cabinet would be unable to survive an other week. The National Assembly, recon vening after its summer recess, was busy for the moment with organizational detail.. But angry members introduced 42 questions on Faure's handling of the Mor occan and Algerian crisis. Sacramento, Calif. Goodwin J. Knight today for announcing his readiness to fight Vice-President Richard M. Nixon for control of California's presidential delega tion. . The rebukes came from Rep. Carl Hinshaw, dean of the Cali fornia congressional delegation and from V. John Xrehbiel, chairman of the Los Angeles County Republican committee. A third GOP leader. Sen. Tho mas H. Kuchel, declined corn- meat on what appeared destined to be a growing controversy. Announces Intention Knight touched off the fire works yesterday when he an nounced his intention of heading a "favorite son" ticket in the California presidential primary next June, provided President Eisenhower does not run for re election. Knight, who has been at polit ical odds with Nixon for years, mentioned hearing rumors that the vice-president's supporters are planning to enter their own slate in the primary if Mr. Eis enhower does not run. Regardless of Nixon Asked if his plans, to run as a favorite son candidate would be changed by the possible fil ing of a Nixon slate, Knight said: "Not in the slightest. We are going all the way, regardless of what Mr. Nixon does." . Knight also said: "I feel that Republicans of California will want to be rep resented in the convention by a delegation that is completely independent and devoted to the Republican party, not to the am bition of any one man." Knight emphasized he is "first mand foremost" for Mr. Eisenhow er. He said if the President does run again, he expects to head up a delegation pledged to him. At the GOP convention in 1952 , California had 70 votes, second only to New '"York's 96. In Los Angeles, Hinshaw said Knight was "something of a joke in national politics," and named three Californians he said could defeat Knight "hands down" for the party's nomination. He said they were Nixon, Sen. William F. Knowland, and Chief Justice Earl Warren. The Challenge Challenging Knight's s kinten tion of heading a favorite son ticket, Hinshaw said: .--V "In full recognition of the fact that controversy among Calif ornia Republicans at this time is undesirable, I nevertheless feel strongly that the amazing antics of our governor ... in connection with his fantastic pre tentions as a bona fide contend er for the office of President, should not go unrebuked." Actually, in announcing his in tention of heading a favorite son ticket. Knight, was not necessar ily announcing his intention of seeking national office for him self. He has mentioned m inter views ' Republicans he feels would make good candidates if Eisenhower bows out. He has not included his own name. Krehbiel declared Knight "forfeits any right he might have had to enter the national picture GOV. GOODWIN KNIGHT . He declared Knight "cer tainly doesn't belong in the class of such out standing men" as Knowland and Nixon. AFL Protests Use Of Prison Labor Yreka Three American Fed eration of Labor officials have protested the proposed use of jail labor for construction of -public buildings in Siskiyou j county. . The three, all from Redding,; appeared before the county board of supervisors Tuesday. The supervisors had authorized use of jail labor for construction of an addition to the county jail building. -' ' Robert Giesick, vice-president of the AFL 15th district, told the supervisors that the AFL is op posed to all types of forced labor, and said it was felt that in re gard to Siskiyou county the board "should take action to dis continue this type of labor" and pay the prevailing wages. Supervisor W. A. Barr told the union delegation that he is opposed to use of prison labor. Barr attempted to read a motion he made earlier in the meeting to the effect that the board-go on record as opposing and, pro hibiting use of jail labor on any structural or interior work on county buildings. .';"'. . Board Chairman Joe Allen ruled that reading of the motion was out of order since the matter already had been settled when the motion died for lack of a second.
