The rub is that medical Milk Consumers In Portland Face Price Increase Portland (U.R) Hghr mil prices faced Portland consumers today . when milk producer groups supplying the city's mar ket area announced increases to be effective Saturday. Dairies said prices to con sumers would be raised propor tionately. Damascus - Carnation, largest dairy in Portland, announced in creases ranging from one half to two cents per quart for milk an four to five cents a half pint for ciQjm. Others To Follow Other dairies said they would follow suit. Impetus for the increase was provided by Farmers Co-op of McMinnvile, Bower Columbia Dairy Association who boosted their prices 35 to 40 cents per hundredweight. The increases will give stores their long-sought "store differ encial" and home delivered prices will be scaled downward in proportion' to the volume of milk delivered. Home delivery price will be 23 cents a quart, compared to the 21 to 22$ents per quart now charged customers who buy one every other day. Those who buy so to 3 quarts a montn win get it for 22 cents. About One Cent a Quart The increase will an?ount to about 48 cents per hundred weight or something like one cent a quart. It will be divided 35 cents to producers and 13 cents to distributors. Firms distributing milk in the Portland metropolitan area said their share will not cover recent cost increases. They cite higher labor costs following last June's z strike. Other milk products will show higher prices, too: Chocolate milk, 24 cents; skim milk 19 cents; Buttermilk, 21 cents, all science, after putting a finger on that person while he was in excellent health, wouldn't know precisely what to do in order to head off the attack. The authority for those state ments is Dr. Paul D. White and his associates in one of the most' thorougbly detailed studies of coronary erterial disease ever made, study which has the mark of clsssic. Dr. White is such an eminent heart expert, it will be recalled, tht he s celled in et once when the President was stricken. The retults of the study were published only laet year end ere not knovn outside of medicine. As of now pre-selecting is theoretical, not practical. How ever, the study, seemed to dem onstate that neither smoking nor drinking nor diet has much if anything to do with preparing the person for the attack. In deed, there was no one thing or a few, simple things. To pick out a person who is likely to have an attack, one would need to take all the following things into consideration and balance them against one another: Four Major Considerations 1. That person's segc,. which would have to be masculine out of 100 coronary blockages, 96 to 97 are in men; 2. His body build; 3. The structural details of his body; 4. His'heredity; 5. How his body chemistry deals with its own chemical products. Dr. White, Dr. Menard M. Gertler, and seven associates of Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, and Harvard University, studied 97 men and three wom en who had had coronary block ages and resultant damage to the heart before they were 40 years old. Each one of the 97 men was matched" with a man of the same age, height, weignt, Doay build, mode of livelihood, racial antecedents, and social status. This group differed from the coronary group only that its. members had never had heart at tacks. Each group was then stu died exhaustively and the find ings were compared.
