U.R) The incredible story of a woman whofeigned a pregnancy and deceived even her own husband was told today by Mrs. Betty Jean Benedicto, 27, confessed Office Workers in No Danger From Robot Chicago (U.R) The elec tronic robot is not yet ready to replace office workers. After a ' study of the four phases of "electronic brain" op eration, "it becomes more .appar ent that the completely auto matic office made up of only sexless and shapeless machinery will not become a reality," said J. Douglas Elliott of the Detroit Edison Co. There are still going to be a lot of peopltf around as "masters of the equipment; many of their jobs are going to be enlarged; and employees of average ability will be able to run the electronic system without need for hiring outside experts," according to Elliott. Some jobs may - go out the window because of the electronic brai, but employees will be given time to find other posi tions. "It will probably take any company installing an electronic system six months to three years to--complete the work," said Elli ott, and this will lighten tha problem of employee transfer and training. But in offices vihich decide to go electronic, large-scale data processing machines are going to "take people to tell them what to do, take people to get work ready for them, take people to operate them and take people to interpret the results produc ed," Elliott added. . Mrs. Benedicto revealed that she had a caesarean delivery three or four years ago and her baby died. She was married at thv time to a man named Ted Walker in Los Angeles. .He was killed later in a motorcycle ac cident, i I wasn't able to have any chil dren after that, but I always wanted a boy of my own," she said. Put on Weight . She married Mark Benedicto, 52, editor of a Filipino newspa per here, last October. "He was very good to me," she said.. "When we were mar-1 ried I weigRed 134 pounds. Then I began putting on weight, and people asked me if I was preg nant Finally I said yes, though I knew it couldn't be." Mrs. Benedicto went to the southern California city last month and told her husband when she returned that she had given birth to a baby but left it with her mother because the child had dysentery and would have to remain in a hospital. "Mark became very insistent," she said. "He wanted to see our boy. I told him I would go and get him." Lots of Babies ' Mrs. Benedicto said she decid ed to come to San Franciso. She went to Mt. Zion hospital where the Marcus baby had been born only two days before. "I saw two or three nurses standing at a desk and asked them where the maternity ward was," she narrated. "Then I walked up to the nursery and there was a room just full of babies. "Then I saw the name on the Marcus baby, both on the crib and on the leg beads. Marcus is my husband's name Mark and that gave me the impulse to take him. "I took him when nobody was in the room. I wrapped him ic his yellow blanket. I walked Salvation Army Provides Camp for Needy Children (Editor'! ote: Tftis is the second in a series of brief arUcles describing the agencies which benefit from the United Medford Crusade fund drive, now under way. The Salvation Army, aided by funds contributed through the United Medford Crusade, main tains a summer camp at Lake of the Woods for under priviledged boys and girls. The camp provides a 10-day vacation for boys and girls be tween the ages of 8 and 16 who otherwisew ould not be able to enjoy ci.mp life. The facilities at the camp in clude a large portion of the shores of Lake 6f the .Woods, where youngsters are offered activities including swimming, supervised boating, fishing, hikes, and scenic trips. The Medford Elks lodge has met the operational expenses of the camp for many years. Im provements on the property, in cluding a newly-installed dock and other equipment, have been contributed by the Medford Junior Chamber of Commerce. The camp is a small, but im portant part of the program car ried on by the Salvation Army in Jackson county. Contributions to the United Medford Crusade make this program possible. down the stairs. If Dr. Marcus had not said over and over ..that I loved the baby and that's why I took it if he had said ' instead that I was a bad woman I never would have given it up." v' -- j More Wealth Under Private Enterprise Guatemala City U.R) Guate mala is sporting a fatter pocket- book under private enterprise than it did under Communist intervention. Government economists say the country's brighter economic outlook is due to the return of "flight capital" and increased loans and technical aid from non Communist nations. During the last year of Com munist government in Guate mala millions of dollars Irom coffee sales and other business capital were deposited in for eign banks. The government policy of na tionalizing business and the in security of private landowners who never knew when their crops or land might be seized caused the mass flight of capital. Money for Industry But the "scared money" is coming back at the rate of near ly a million dollars a month, said Economy Minister Jorge Arenales Catalan. Money in circulation, $95,000, 000 (U. S.) as compared to $92, 000,000 toward the endfof the government of ousted president Jacobo Arbenz, also indicates the stepped-up rhythm of commer cial activity, the minister said. And more money is available to Guatemalan industry. The government's Institute for Fomenting production granted credits amounting to $889,913 during the first half of this year. This is more than twice the $369,961 granted during 1954, half of which was under the Arbenz regime. This shot in the industrial arm is showing results in Guate mala's first industrial exposition where more than 2,000 daily visi tors are seeing products from 56 national industries, 11 of which were started after the expulsion of the Communists. Construction Revived Of the 56 industries represent ed at the ' exposition, one-third are owned by combined Guate malan and foreign capital. Also, Guatemala's new inter national position has enabled it to receive loans and iecbnical aid from the West for renewal of long abandoned road, hospital and communications projects. The United States alone has appropriated $3,675,000 to re open construction on: a coast-to-coast road and contributed $1, 425,000. for work on Guatemala's section of the Pan American Highway. These visible signs of the coun try's growing economic stability are resulting in increased inves tor confidence, - says Arenales Catalan who predicted even greater commercial acjjvity dur ing the second half of 1955.
