BEWARE THE BAD HEART OBSESSION Five years ago I told here, or at least I wrote for publication here a story about two men who, some months following coronary thrombosis, achieved outstanding athletic record, one in mountain climbing in Switz erland, the other in marathon in South Africa. Not that such extreme phy sical effort is advisable for every one who has had one or more coronary accidents. I cited these achievements merely to show that a person who has or has had one or another kind of heart trouble is not thereby barred from working and playing. On the contrary, as I try to explain in detail in Little Lesson 2, C V D, about heart and artery troubles, (for a copy send 25c and stamped, self-addressed en velope), graduated exercise is an indispensable part of the suc cessful treatment of any and every kind of heart trouble. So I say to the individual with heart trouble, If. you're not a malingerer, a tramp or a low grade moron, by all means avail yourself of the remedial effect of graduated exercise, no matter what 19th century medical au- W like the idea of safety belts in cars but we can suggest one improve " ment. . Whenever I see a poor geek who has or has had some kind of heart trouble walking on eggs I feel about the same as I do when some reader sends me a clipping of a newspaper report er's story, in the traditional humorous style, of the wholesale tonsillectomy perpetrated on an entire family or at least upon the defenseless children in the family; or "when some gullible customer describes the suffering he or she endured for several days following the clamp and cautery operation for piles. I feel mad, I grit my teeth and I still have a full complement" of teeth in good working order, most of them my own and I swear (mentally). Plague take such dumb doctors, I exclaim, or worse. For many years I have told you timid souls that heart trou ble, no matter just what kind of trouble it may be, should not handicap any one or prevent him or her from doing moderate work, walking, dancing, playing golf, bowling, gardening, skat ing, swimming or engaging in any ordinary physical activity. In my opinion any one who claims he or she is totally dis abled by weak heart or heart disease should be given the alter native of going to work or sub mitting to examination by an in dependent commission of two or more competent physicians whose judgment would be con clusive. Such an unemotional way of dealing with the bad heart ob session would be a blessing to all concerned.
