SIXTEEN MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE Wednesday. September 28, 1955 Presidency Hazardous Occupation, Record of Past 55 Years Shews Bv LYLE C. WILSON United Press Correspondent Washington (U.R) On the record of the past 55 years, the presidency of the United States is as hazard ous as any oc c u p a t ion on earth. Five of 10 presidents since the turn of the century have died or been cruelly stricken in of fice. William McKinley was assassinated in 1901. Warren Gamaliel Harding and Franklin D. Roosevelt died in office, both of cerebral hemorrhage, al though Harding also was suffer ing from pneumonia. Woodrow t Wilson was partially paralyzed during the latter months of his second term and for long was unable to discharge the duties rri f 1 f -XL Lyle C Wilson of his office. President hower was struck down by a heart attack last Saturday, but is making good recovery prog ress. Theodore Roosevelt had some illness but vigorously survived almost two White House terms only to be pinked by an assas sin's bullet when he sought re election as the Bull Moose can didate in 1912. Assassination Attempt in 1933 An assassin shot at President elect' Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1933, the bullet killing Mayor Anton Cermak of Chicago. They occupied an open automobile in Miami, Fla. Two Puerto Ricans stormed Blair House while President and Mrs. Truman were in residence there, but were unable to reach Mr. Truman. The record of the past 55 kyears is impressive. Dr. Karl C. Wold had that in mind when he wrote the book called "Mr. Pres- Eisen-1 ident How is Your Health?" Beginning with George Wash ington, Dr. Wold reported that presidents more often than not have suffered severe and often protracted illness while in the White House. Washington was seized with severe pains in his thigh shortly after his first in auguration. Pain, chills and high fever finally required surgery, minus an anesthetic, to remove a carbuncle. Illnesses Follow Patterns The illnesses of presidents fol lowed the patterns of the medi cal history of their times, Wold wrote. The earlier presidents Mistrial Pondered On Murder Charges Minneapolis U.R) District Judge Leslie L'. Anderson today considered a demand for a dec laration of mistrial and a change of venue in the case of a dentist charged with seducing and stran gling' a patient. Attorneys for the dentist, Dr. A. Arnold Axilrod, 50, accused the state of trying" to "blacken the whole defense" as they made the demand Tuesday. Anderson delayed a ruling, but commented "I have had a feeling there was a little too much of trying this case in the news." Axilrod is accused of drugging and seducing" Mrs. Elizabeth Mary Moonan, 21-year-old wife of a soldier stationed in Korea. The state charges that he stran gled her in his car when she told him he had made her preg nant and threatened "to tell the world." Axilrod denies the charges. His trial on murder charges is more than a week old, but only nine jurors have been chosen. were more often afflicted with intestinal infections. Heart dis ease is a more modern killer, al though there always is the pos sibility that earlier physicians may have failed to recognize it in their diagnosis. Nine former presidents have died of heart disease but there is no record of such as the cause of the death of . a president in office. Cerebral hemorrhage Resuscitator Obtained By Phoenix Firemen Phoenix The Phoenix fire department has received a resus citator, which will be available for use by doctors and others in the community, it was announced today. i The resuscitator is being kept at the home of Fire Chief Leo Furry. Dr. Wold found that modern presidents do not live as long, on the average, as their prede cesors. The first 10 presidents lived to an average age of 77.4 years, the second 10 to an aver age of 63.7 years. From Chester A. Arthur to Franklin D. Roose velt, the average age of presi dents at the time of death was down to 61.1 years. 'rain? JjJALWJd 12 County 4-H Members Given . Progress Medals Twelve Jackson county 4-H club members have received medals in the national 4-H club awards program for outstand ing progress in club projects. The awards are sponsored na tionally by business firms which are interested in promoting youth activities. Twelve memb ers of Jackson county clubs are competing for state awards in the national program. Social Security Booklets Received Two new booklets, "How Soc ial Security Covers Farmers and "How Does Social Security Affect Farm Families," have been received by the, Medford Social Security office. The first booklet is to help farmers determine whether they are employed or self-employed, especially in relation to farm ing of land leased on a cash rental or share crop basis. A section is devoted to income re porting requirements for self- employed farmers. The second booklet tells how long a person has to work to get retirement payments, ex plains special provisions where by farmers and other newly covered workers can become in sured, and' gives examples of benefit amounts. Copies of the booklets may be obtained by contacting the Social Security office, 33 North Riverside ave. Walla Walla Convicts Stage Hunger Strike Walla Walla, Wash. (U.R) Thirty-seven convicts charged with spearheading riots in July and August at the state prison here have gone on a hunger strike, Warden Lawrence Del more Jr. said today. Delmore said the 37 inmates, housed in a maximum security section of the prison, refused yesterday's three meals. He said an extra guard had been placed on the cellblock but no violence was reported. "The men generally are pro testing charges brought against the July riot ringleaders," Del more said. A major riot broke out at the prison July 5 when convicts seized nine hostages and took over all the prison except the closely guarded walls. The hos tages were released unharmed 26 hours later when 'prison of ficials signed a "treaty" ending the riot. Tulelake Man, 36, Missing in Alaska 1 Tulelake, Calif. U.PJ Gerald H. Watson, 36, former employee of the fish and wildlife service here, has been reported missing land feared drowned in Alaska. Tom Horn, manager of the Tulelake wild life refuge, said he received word that Watson dis appeared Sept. 9 with a James D. Peterson, - address unknown.
