September 23, 1955 hurricane Janet Seen As No Threat o U.S. Mainland ' Miami (U.R) Hurricane Janet blasted through the sparsely set tled Windward Islands and headed into the open Caribbean Sea today with a suddenly grown force of 115 miles per hour. The nw tempest, termed al ready dangerous, although scarcely two days old, roared westward across open water to ward Central America. No Threat To Mainland Weathermen discounted any potential threat to the U.S. main landome 1,600 miles away but .aid the twice-bit Yucatan Pe ninsula might come into. Janet's ranee. Grant said he would first finance an operation for a two- year-old Portland girl who re quires surgery to enable her to speak. He said the parents of little Cathie PloenSe liad be friended him when his luck was bad and he feels tHe operation will help repay the "debt." Sharing Grant's windfall will be Harold F. Thornton of Kla math, Calif., Grant's nephew. They are the sole heirs of the original holders of the valuable Indian timber trusts on the Ore gon coast. Copco Contracts , Will Be Reviewed Klamath Falls (U.R) A re view of the proposed contracts between California Oregon Pow er Company and the Bureau of Reclamation for power develop ment and water storage in the Klamath Basin was on the agen da today at a joint meeting of the Oregon and California KL msth River Commissions. Members of the California commission yesterday reviewed the contracts at a meeting pre sided over by Burton A. Phil lips, Trinity county, Calif., who was elected chairman after resig nation of William G. Hagelstein, Dorris, Calif. Phillips said the California Klamath Basin group does not favor Copco's request for a re newal of the present 50-year contract with the Bureau of Re clamation. He said it would give private power priority over the waters of upper Klamath lake in preference to water for irri gation, domestic, and municipal 425 miles south-southwest of San Juan. . A Navy reconnaissance plane during, the night found the hur ricane at the moment was mov ing on a course between west and west northwest, at about 15 miles per - hour, the advisory said. Shipping in the hurricane's path was advised to use caution, The . danger apparently had passed for the Leeward Islands. The whirler Thursday swept across the British Island of Bar bados, forcing the weatherman to abandon his coastal post for better shelter, the weather bu reau reported. Forecaster William McGee of the Miami Weather Bureau said Janet apparently was starting a long trek across the open Carib bean in which it could blow it self out without striking land, Although the storm could turn northward toward Puerto Rico it appeared likeliest to con- tine westward toward Central America, McGee said. Janet's predecessor, Hurri cane Hilda, struck the Yucatan from another route across east ern Cuba and continued across lower gulf waters into Mexico, where flooding has caused a catastrophe. The toll of Hilda's victims in the area of Tam'pico, "Mexico, has risen above the 200 mark and another 370 persons "are. missing and assumed dead. Farm Price Drop Seen Sign of GOP Failure Washington (U.R) Sen. Paul H Douglas said today that latest government figures on falling farm prices are proof that "the Republican farm policy has failed." The Illinois Democrat cited re ports of the ; Federal Reserve Ttnarri the Agriculture Depart ment and President Eisenhower's Council of Economic Advisers. The Federal Reserve said in its monthly bulletin last night that farm income will be "some what smaller" this year than last and perhaps will be one-sixth below the peak in 1951. It said farm prices for the month of August were 8 per cent less than a year ago and that farm debt has risen appreciably since last fall. v-.. The Agriculture Department reported that farm prices were down 4 per cent for the first eieht months of this, year, as against the corresponding period last year. ' Children To Be Guests At Portland Air Base Portland (U.R) Some 250 children from various parts of the state will be guests at the Portland Air Base tomorrow. The Air Force will play host to the youngsters as' part of a nationwide Kids Day sponsored annually by the Kiwanis Inter national.
