Woman Ambassador To Switzerland Uncooked smoked meats will stay fresh longer if they are wrapped in a vinegar-dampened cloth, in waxed paper, and then stored. By ELIZABETH TOOMEY United Press Correspondent New York U.R) Name the two American women ambassa dors and the countries to which they are assigned. Try this one on your friends. If you do not find that at least four out of five promptly give the name of Clare Boothe Luce and Italy, then falter and finally fail to name the second woman or nation then we have a re quest. . , Please write to a charming woman named Frances Willis, our ambassador . to Switzerland, and tell her that among' your friends her admirable career has not gone unnoticed. Because, quite frankly, a num ber of people are unaware that we have a second woman ambassador. And Miss Willis is aware that this is so. U.N. Advisor "Do you mind that a lot of Americans never heard of you?" we asked Miss Willis the day after she arrived here to act as one of the advisors to the U.S. delegation to the U.N. Assembly. Miss Willis smiled. She is a tall, slim woman with expres sive blue eyes, slightly grey hair and a gentle sense of humor. "Happy is the reign that has no history," she said. Actually, of the three Ameri can women who have served as ambassadors and the three who have the longest diplomatic his tory, she is the only woman career diplomat ever to rise to the rank of ambassador. It sounds so simple it's hard to believe," Miss Willis said. "Twenty-eight years ago I was teaching government at Vassar and I decided that all I knew about government I had learned out of books. I took the examina tion and passed it and went into foreign service for what I thought was a short time. I just found it far too fascinating to leave." Appointed In 1,953 She was appointed ambassador to Switzerland by President Ei senhower in 1953 and moved to Berne from Helsinki, where she was the consul for two years. . "When I dress up and put on a little makeup for evening, people who have seen me only in the office sometimes don't recognize me," Miss Willis said. "I can look quite severe behind a desk." She put on a pair of glasses and scowled slightly to look se vere. She wore no makeup at all, except fingernail polish. The ef fort was fairly unsuccessful, since her warmth said friendli ness are too apparent to conceal.
