They'll Do It Every Time - By Jimmy Hatlo ;g - Highlights of Trip Through Europe Told By Terry Brereton (Editor'i note: Terry Brereton of Medford recently re turned to his home after a trip to Europe as a delegate to an international YMCA conference in Paris. While away, he wrote a series of articles about his experiences, which were published in the Mail Tribune. Since his return, he has pre ' pared a final article as a summary of his trip, which appears below.) Our European tour is all over now. We had a very exciting and wonderful time. Th$ people of every country we visited were very nice and friendly. Whenever we needed help it wasn't hard to find some one who could speak a little English. They were always hap py to give us directions or help us buy something in a store. Although the people of each country we visited were very nice, I think that we felt more at3 home in Germany. Wherever we went we were given a very hearty welcome by the Germans, In every country we visited English is either required or electively taught in all the schools. Maybe this is because there are so many American and English tourists in Europe. Climate Similar The climate, and vegetation in Europe is similar to ours in the corresponding latitudes. One dif ' ference that is noticeable is the greenness of the vegetation. The color is a much deeper green than in most of the United States. Central Dial 3-5371 Our trip from England down through Holland, Germany, Aus tria and Switzerland, was through fertile farm land. North ern Italy is just about the same, but as we got into southern Italy the land changed notice ably. It gradually changes from orchards and farms to just desert. It is all desert around Rome and Naples and Pompeii. Saw Pear Orchards In. northern Italy I was sur prised to see pear orchards. These were the only pear orchards that we noticed in all of Europe. The Y.M.C.A. World Centen nial Conference was held in Paris, France, on Aug. 12 to 23. The conference was set up to make it possible for people from around the world to gather with one interest, and discuss together problems which arise in com munities, homes, and Y.M.C.A. clubs, and how these problems are dealt with in their respec tive countries. . . The delegates to the confer ence for Older Boys and Girls, which I attended were divided into groups. Everybody belonged to two groups, a discussion group and a Bible study group. In these groups, .which met every day,' we discussed the topic of our confer ence "Living Together." Different Groups In the discussion groups we talked about the material in our study guides. The Bible study groups discussed sections in the Bible related to the topic of the day. The Bible study, discussion showed us that religion is similar all around the world. Everybody at the conference had the same general belief about God, hence our theme,- "That they all may be one." - The biggest event at the con ference was the big centenial rally. There were 10,000 people at the rally. In the 10,000 there were 76 nations represented. The program consisted of out standing perfomances given by irJ TONIGHT AT 6:30 EXCLUSIVE ON KYJC RADIO Go' a 2 ARCHIE MOORE " Wtrld light Itavjwiifht Champion . Flew Homo After the conference was over, the Pacific Northwest delegation flew from Paris to New York. None of us had ever made a trans-oceanic flight before. It was a great experience. After two days in New York we took the train to Washing ton, D. C. While we were in Washington we had a special guided our through the White House. The trip across the continent to Seattle was made by train. Since this is my last story I want to thank the Medford Mail Tribune for giving me the priv ilege of having my stories print ed for the public to read. I also want to thank the people of Med ford for making it possible for me to have made the trip, by supporting the YMCA as much as they do. Use Tribune Want Ads QUICK and EASY! FOR P A 1 1! Just tell your pay office how much you want to save each payday. Your company invests .the money for you in U. S. Series E Savings Bonds. Then the money you worked so hard for starts working equally hard for you. When held to maturity (Sf years and 8 months), each Series E Bond pays an average of 3 per year, com pounded semiannually.
