Local and Building Permits Mr. and Mrs. E. L. Bunnell, 32 South Chestnut st., have been issued a building permit to erect a $10. 500 residence. A. R. Dubs, 2133 Siskiyou blvd., Medford, was is sued a permit to construct a $12,000 residence. Assume Name The business name "Sharp's Dairy Supply" has been assumed by Archie Sharp, Aubrey M. Wisdom and Marcus L. McKenzie, according to Jackson county record's of fice records. The business ad dress is 217 West Sixth st., Meiford. Hit-Run Medford police said a California licensed car parked on South Front st. near Ninth st. was struck by an unidenti fied vehicle about 9 p.m. Mon day. Owner of the parked car also was unidentified, police said. Dissolve Name Marvin L. and nienn L. Crocker have dis solved the business name "Auto motive Beauty Center," accord ing to records in the JacKson county recorder's office. The name has been assumed by Roy V. Jr. and Gloria R. Deutsch man, 796 Waverly st., Medford. Car Hits Train Russell Bur ton Hicks. 27, of 1806 Ashland St.. Ashland, escaped at about 3 a.m. today when his car collided with a train at the Walker ave. intersection in Ashland, accord ing to state police. Hicks was lodged in the county jail on a charge of being drunk on a pub lic highway, police said. Retire Business Charles W. Martin and O. P. Prewitt have retired ' the business name "Duke's Body Shop" and have assumed the business n.ame "Medford Body Shop' 'at 516 South Riverside ave, according tofiecords in the Jackson coun- ty recorder's office. Parents Visit Mr. and Mrs. Roy Wilkes, 619 South Oakdale ave., had as their visitors until the first of the week their par ents, Mr. and Mrs. T. J. Wilkes, Floydada, Tex., and Mr. and Mrs. G. N. Shirley, Ft. Worth, Tex. While the visitors were hqre the Wilkes drove them to Four Mile and Crater lakes and other points of interest in the valley. This is their second visit to fttie vicinity since their son daughter moved here two years ago. At Conference Kenneth G. Natland, Box 123, Medford, is in Vancouver, Wash., where he is attending a five-day conference of administrative assistants of the Oregon Military district. He is representing the Army Re serve advisor's office in Med ford. The meeting opened Sept. 19th and will continue through the 23rd. Purpose of the confer ence is to pass on the latest in formation and procedures for the conduct of Army Reserve business. Col. Willard B. Car lock is the chief of the Oregon Military district. Cars Collide Cars driven by iranK uavis Patton, 60, of route 1, box 439, Gold Hill, and Lola May Ward, 39, Grants Pass, col lided Tuesday on Highway 99 about half a mile south of Rogue River, according to state police. The accident occurred as the Patton car was turning into a driveway, according to inves tigating officers. Nancy Ward, 9Vs, a passenger in the second car, received a small cut over one eye in the accident. To Attend Session Elliott Becken, assistant superintendent of schools, and Darrell Davis, also with the Medford public schools, will attend a meeting of chairmen of teacher - composed committees Sept. 23 at Salem. The session is an orientation to a year-long study of the scope and seauence of major subject area of the curriculum from kindergarten through the 12th grade, Rex Putnam, superin tendent of public instruction announced. The program opened this morning with a welcoming as sembly at Churchill hall. Guid ance testing was slated from 9 a.m. to noon, with a luncheon from noon to 12:45 p.m. at Sus anne Homes hall. This afternoon's schedule of events included guidance testing from 1 to 4 p.m. Tonight, at 8 o'clock, an assembly is planned at the auditorium, to be followed by advisers' open house from 8:30 to 10 o'clock. Thursday Schedule Thursday, at 8 a.m., a panel discussion of college life will be presented by students and fac ulty members. Student discus sion groups are planned from 9 to 9:30 a.m. and from 10:15 to 11 a.m. Campus tours will be held from 11 a.m. to noon, when luncheon will be served at Sus anne Homes hall. A panel discussion of curricu lar progress will be held from. 1 to 1:30 p.m. Group discussions with advisers are slated from 1:45 to 2:15 p.m. and individual conferences, with advisers will be held from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. A social event is planned for 8 to 10 p.m. Thursday at the audi-. torium. Temporary Teacher Certificates OKd , Salem (U.R) The State Board of Education today approved 18 temporary teachers certificates because of "an acute teacher shortage." In all cases the request for the temporary permits came from local school authorities, most of them in remote sections of the state, in behalf of individuals who did not have sufficient aca demic credits to warrant per manent teaching permits. The school authorities told the board it had been impossible to get the services of certificated teachers and unless ' the temporary per mits were granted, operation of their schools would be impaired. Freshman registration at Ore gon Technical Institute in Klam ath Falls has shown a large in crease this fall. The board was advised that on the second day of registration 509 freshmen had signed in, compared to 391 on the second day of the fall term a year ago. 4-H Leaders to Pick County Award Winners The Jackson county 4-H lead ers association executive com mittee will meet in the extension agent's office at 8 p.m. today to select county winners in the 4-H national awards program. . Club members over 14 years old who have been active in club projects for three consecutive years are eligible to compete. About 175 are eligible in Jackson county. As part of his observance of the occasion, 'the 82-year-old Democrat said he will visit the state prison at Salem. West, who was governor from 1911 to 1915, inaugurated an honor system at the prison which was a forerun ner to the present parole system. The Wests were married at Salem in 1897. Portland Evacuation Traffic Control Due Salem U.R) Motorists head ed toward Portland during the evacuation test next week will be stopped or diverted to keep from blocking the flow of out bound traffic, the Oregon Civil Defense agency said today. Some 200,000 people will be moved from the test area dur ing "Operation . Green Light," which centers in the business district, the CD agency said. The test will take place on the after noon of Sept. 27, 28 or 29. State and Portland police and county sheriff's officers will man traffic control points in the city and in Multnomah, Clacka mas, Columbia, Washington and Yamhill counties to prevent in coming traffic from blocking the evacuation. Bristow has deeded 35 per cent interest in property in the Sardine creek left fork area to Harold R. Jones, who listed his address as the Vitus building, 12th and High sts., Eugene. Dewey L. Bristow and Richard W. Bristow deeded oth er property in the same area to Jones on a 35 per cent interest basis, according to deeds filed. Interest in the property in cludes material, ores, gold and silver bearing quartz. Leo A. Toney, Box 272, Phoe nix, has filed a mining claim in the Jackson county recorder's office. The claim is in the Star Gulch Mining district and is known as 16 Gulch. Search for Missing Port landers Futile Portland U.R The search for two Portland women, miss ing since Sunday afternoon, so far has proved fruitless. State police and Multnomah county sheriff's officers today reported that no trace of the women has been found, although all roads in the Portland area have been patrolled constantly since their disappearance was reported. The women, Mrs. Avera E. Ferguson, 53, and -Mrs. Bernice N. Sharkey, 75, were last seen Sunday afternoon when they left for a drive in Mrs. Fergu son s green 1939 Ford. It followed an announcement by the Union Pacific Railroad that, as of Oct. 30, its connecting service between Chicago and Omaha for five crack stream liners will be handled by the Milwaukee Road. The trains are the City of Los Angeles, City of Portland, City of San Francisco, City of Den ver 'and the Los Angeles Chal lenger. The UP announcement yester-1 day ended a 75-year-old agree- ment with the Chicago . and j Northwestern Railway- for carry ing its cross-country trains in and out of the windy city. The C&NW carried the trains between Chicago and Omaha, and the UP carried them between Omaha . and the West Coast Other western roads use similar connecting arrangements. . In New York,- jthe stock Ex change reported that confirma tion of the contract cancellation resulted in C&NW common clos ing at $18.75, down 12 cents.
