JACKSONVILLE 'Granny Mills' Jacksonville Funeral serv ices were held last week for a favorite Jacksonville personal ity,- Mrs. Phoebe Mills, more fondly known here as 'Granny Mills.' She made her home in Southern Oregon for the last 50 years until recently when she left Jacksonville to reside with her son, Frank Dowling, in Red Bluff, at whose home she died. Committal was in Siskiyou Me morial park in Medford. Other survivors include an other son and his family, Mr. ajid Mrs. D. C. Mills, The Dalles, well known former residents of Jacksonville, with whom 'Gran ny' made her home for years. . Mr. and Mrs. Wilton Garrett, Glendale, Ore., were visitors at the home of Mr. and Mrs. War ren Hazen this week. He is staging a comedy by Edith Sommer, "A Roomful of Roses, which he and Stanley Gilkey are producing. IT3 111 North Central Passes Mr. and Mrs. Ray Wilson re turned this week from a few days vacation trip. In Roseburg they visited two cousins, Mrs. Throneburg and Mrs. Dave Henry. They also visited several coastal cities including Coos Bay, Brookings and Crescent City. Mr. and Mrs. John Walker. Fullerton, Calif., and Mr. and Mrs. Montenegro and daughter Helen, Whittier, Calif., called on Mrs. Easter Darting last week. They were all former neigh bors in California several years ago. Home on leave from the Navy this week is Warren Daley, son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Daley. Spending a week with the E. E. Walls were her sister and family, .Mr., and, . Mrs. . Ward Campbell, and their son Arthur, recently released from the Army after overseas duty in Germany. They were en route home to Sherman, Tex. The ' Campbells were also guests of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Stevens, Jacksonville. The three families had an outing at Lake of the Woods and while there also visited Mrs. Camp bell's niece, Mrs. P. S. Neeley. Mr. and Mrs. M. J. Swing, Medford, and ' Mrs. Blanche Brown, Oreville, Calif., were afternoon guests at the J.' B. Noble home last Sunday. Miss Alyce Atherton, daugh ter of Mrs. Fred Dutton, is home after spending the summer in Honolulu, Hawaii. Miss Ather ton is leaving Jacksonville this week for Portland to enter the school of nursing at the Univer sity of Oregon medical school. : The Jacksonville Royal Neigh bor ladies on Tuesday .evening, Sept. 20, will meet to sew for their bazaar. Each is to bring a sack lunch.-' ; Visiting at the P. E. Matheny home last week end were for mer Jacksonville residents Mr. and Mrs. C. R. Kamberg, New Port, Ore. Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Waresback ahdTMrs. Dell Coulter, Klamath Falls, were callers last week at the A. H. Reed residence. Reunited last week in Jack sonville after a 40 year separa tion were Lovey Galentine, 87, and his sister, Miss Ruey Galen tine, 68, Topeka, Kan. The Gal entines were born in Colorado and became separated 40 years ago when the family moved to Kansas. Through the efforts of the police in Topeka they lo cated Galentine in Jacksonville and his sister arrived here last week to make her home" with Mr. and Mrs. Galentine on Birch lane in Jacksonville. Charles Welch, son of Mr. and Mrs, Robert Welch, arrived home last; week' after a two weeks visit with his tw';; aunts "and uncles, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Wes- terberg in Mulino, Ore, and Mr. and Mrs. A. C. Smith, Molalla, Ore. He also .related an inter esting story of his climbing Mt. Adams, a 12,000 foot, peak in Washington, with, a Portland mountain climbing group known as the Mazamas. There were in the group, including two women, and according to Welch it took approximately 18 hours to reach the top. The tempera ture was cold with a lot of snow on the north side, making neces sary the use of ice axes and crampons on their heavy boots. After reaching the top they signed a register. He said they had a good view of the Three Sisters, mountains in "Oregon, from the south side and could look down into Canada from the north side. SHADY COVE-TRAIL Anniversary is Marked Shady Cove -Trail Mr. and Mrs. Rufus Trusty, Elk Creek, Trail, entertained at their 'home Saturday, Sept. 10, in honor of the 25th wedding anniversaries of Mr. and Mrs. Royal Green man and Mr. and Mrs. U. R. Wagler, . Trail. . Trusty was also honored on the occasion of his 65th birthday. Mrs. Wayne Ash, Trail, was co-hostess. The honored couples were presented with gifts, and Mrs. Wagler and Mrs. Green man were presented with cor sages from the host and hos tesses. An offering of food and groceries was given to the group which left Sept. 15 to attend the Prairie Bible Institute in Alberta,- Canada, including Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Wagler, Don and Phyllis Collins, Claudia Ash and Jack Carlton. The items of groceries given were those that the group find it hard to obtain in Canada. Guests present included Mrs. Family Gathers In Eagle Point Eagle Point Mrs. Clayton Simmons, Eagle Point,' was host ess September 12 for a family reunion and birthday party at her home. Her mother, Mrs. Clara Wilhite, of Medford, ob served her birthday anniversary and four sisters of Mrs. Wilhite attended the event. They are Mrs. Nellie Glass, White City: Mrs. Bessie Case, Medford; Mrs. Ollie Walker, Shady Cove, and Mrs. Mattie Rodgers, Butte Falls. Children of the women also attended. Two other daughters of Mrs. Wilhite also attended, Mrs. Hugh Barber, Tillamook, and Mrs. Vernon Monia, Medford Auxiliary Member To Attend Session Mrs. Earl Bigalow, .1701 East Main street, chairman of the state Americanism committee of the auxiliary to the American Legion, plans to leave Tuesday for Portland. She will be one of the instructors at a four-day meeting there for the presidents and secretaries of state auxil iaries. Mrs. Herb Gifford, pres ident of the local auxiliary, also plans to attend the sessions. Rus sell is teaching school again this year at Empire. V Mr. and Mrs. Edward O'Neil, Shady Cove, have moved to Cen tral Point near . their daughter and family, Mr. and Mrs. Kenny Van de Kamp. They purchased a trailer before leaving. Mrs. Bob Edminster, Merced, Calif., daughter of Mr. and Mrs, Scott Brill, Trail, won two prizes and a cash award for her flower arrangements at " the Merced Fair recently. ' Mrs. Edna . Alexander return ed by plane to her home in Oak land, Calif., Monday, after visit ing with her daughter and hus band, Mr. and Mrs. Gus Olson, Eagle Point, and her grandson and family, Mr. and Mrs. Tom Quail, Shady Cove. Other recent visitors of the Olson and Quail families were Mr. and Mrs. Ray Chilcoat, Staunton, Neb. Mrs Chilcoat is an aunt of Mrs, Olson. Mr. and Mrs. Johnny, Johnson and baby daughter spent a week visiting with Mrs. Johnson's sis ter and husband, Mr. and Mrs. Johnny Jones, Shady Cove. Jerry Eastgate, son of Mr. and Mrs. Allen Eastgate, formerly of Shady Cove and now of Med ford, has returned from Ketchi kan, Alaska, where he was em ployed during the summer months. He spent Sunday after noon visiting with his grandpar ents, Mr. and Mrs. T. M. Little field, Shady Cove.. He is enter ing . Oregon State college at Corvallis this fall. Two local 4-H girls received honors at the State Fair at Sa lem for their 4-H work. Susan Chubb ' placed second ; in , her Home Making II class, receiv ing a red ribbon. Suzanne Stuart received a white .ribbon award. Her project was Home' Making I. F. G. Petrie showed pic tures of . the Hawaiian islands which he and Mrs. Petrie took while on a visit there in July. They visited their son, Bob, who is stationed there. The pictures were greatly enjoyed by those present. The Seafarers club is for all people in the community 60 years oldor older. Mrs. Hazel Reynolds and son of Van Nuys, Calif., visited over night, recently at the Joe Gold ing home. Mr. and Mrs. Donald Brady and children, Patrick and Kath leen, Yakima, Wash., spent the week of Sept. 2 with Mrs. Brady's mother, Mrs. Juanita Scott, and also visited her grand parents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Den gler and Mr. and Mrs. Jim Whip ple and other relatives. They re turned to their home Sept. 8. Miss Cheryl Brown, Grants Pass, spent the week end with her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Smith. . Mr. and Mrs. Jim Rhoten, Ft. Barnetts Jr. Mrs. V. A. Miller left last week for a two months' trip to Kansas . where she will attend the reunion of the 13CC club. It will be the 50th anniversary of the club. While. gone she will visit Yellowstone park and other points of interest, Mr. and Mrs. John Branam and son,- Mike, returned last week from a short vacation at Paradise, Calif., where they vis ited his mother. The Women's association of Hope Presbyterian church will hold a bazaar Saturday, Sept. 17, at 1 p.m. in the Fellowship hall. Pie and coffee 1 will be served all day. A baked bean and brown bread dinner will be served, starting at 5 p.m. Mr. and Mrs. Orvis Reeter and daughter spent the Labor day week end visiting Mr. and Mrs. Harold Laws and daughter at Eugene. The Rev. and Mrs. Shaw left this week to make their home on their ranch at Vale, Ore. The EAT - Hobby club met Sept. 1 at the home of Mrs. Cloyd Dick on Highway 99 south. A good attendance of members was present and one visitor, Mrs. Zorah Wiley, enjoyed the meet ing. The bridegroom is the son of Milton Eisenhower, president of Pennsylvania State . university and brother of the President Young Eisenhower is an airline executive in New York where the couple will live.
