of match play on Monday.
Only one of themi Ward, was
among those who was given a
eood chance to win the title
when play started and the bet
ting today was that the former
British Amateur champion
would come through.
Ward gained the semi-finals
with an easy 6 and 4 victory
over 19-year-old Jimmy McCoy
of Lake Worth, Fla., in the quarter-finals
after having disposed
of Bob McCall, a Youngstown,
Ohio, sporting goods salesman in
the fifth round earlier in the
day, 3 and 2.
. Booe defeated Charley Kun
kle, a 40-year-old water works
company official from Johnston,
Pa., 1 up in Thursday's after
noon quarter-finals after Kunkle
had eliminated British Amateur
king Joe Conrad of San Antonio,
Texas, 3 and 2. In the morning
Tound Booe defeated Bill War
yan of Minneapolis, 5 and 4.
Robbins Took Miles
: In addition to taking care of
Hopkins, Robbins defeated John
Miles of Mamaroneck, N.Y., in
Thursday's matches, 2 and 1.
Hyndman first kayoed Jimmy
McHale, another Philadelphia in
surance broker in the morning,
2 and 1, and then in the after
noon knocked out 19-year-old
Joe Campbell, Purdue Univer
sity student from Anderson,
Ind., 2 up.
The Crusaders will begin their
season with a good number of
veterans in the line-up. And at
last report they will be near
intact physically. . Center John
Walsh will miss the fray be
cause of shoulder dislocation.
St. Mary's will continue to
use the double wing which was
introduced last year. But Coach
Willard Webb, new this year, has
also brought back the split T
However, Webb has indicated
that his club will play under
wraps as much as possible Sat
urday and save its surprises
for conference teams.
Jim Darland and Dick Paup
may open at ends tomorrow and
Paup will also see service in the
backfield. One end, Gerald Dar
land, has been shifted to center
to make up for Walsh's loss and
likely will start there. Tack
les will be picked from among
Alson Geren, Ramon Elberts and
Jerry Flakus. Either Green or
Elberts could begin at a guard
and, if so, the other guards will
be chosen from among Francis
Murphy, Ed Fogel and Jack
Relling.
To Alternate
Both Ron Pruitt and Bill
Carey, transfers from Ohio, may
alternate much of the time Sat
urday between quarterback and
left half. Another left half eyed
for duty is Jerome McQuade,
freshman' from Central Point,
Laval Meunier is the likely op
ening right half with Paup to
spell him. Fullback is Jim Jones.
Illinois Valley will put an
all-letterman crew on the field
but only three of , them were
regulars last year. -
Probable line for Coach Gale
Davis's Cougars is Mike Piller
and Howard Pickle, ends; Eldo
Swift and . Don Camp, tackles;
Ken Krause and Ron Spencer,
guards, . and Alan Burr, center.
Backs may be Ed .Neil,- Pete
Johnson, Ken Lockhart and Boy
Cole. Pickle,-Neil and Lockhart

Roseburg Indians
Play at Ashland
Ashland Ashland high grid
men show their 1955 model to'
home fans this evening when
they entertain Roseburg here.
Al Simpson, handling the
head grid coaching duties for
the Grizzlies, has groomed his
crew with a double wing attack
which worked effectively in a
10 to 6 win over Fortuna, Calif.,
las night. It could mean some
spectacular football this fall.
Roseburg loomed strong in
pre-season drills but fell to Esta
cada, last week. The Indians
may be back in stride this week.
