In court yesterday the woman, Mrs. Bonnie Jean Barde, 36, re turned to 63-year-old Clarence E. Rapp piece by piece articles he had given her. They included a $2000 diamond ring, and a 375 watch. She had testified that the gifts were made "with no strings at tached." Defense witnesses yes terday testified they had never heard her speak of marrying Rapp. He has accused her of en tering into a scheme to tell him she loved him and thus got from him gifts worth some $12,305. Defense witnesses said they had never Been her wear the ring except on her right hand. W Reserve the Right to Limit Quantities Lots of Free Parking Space No Emergency Exists, Spokesman For Navy Declares Washington -(U.R) The Navy said today there is "no idea of abandoning" any of the Arctic cargo ships fighting Polar ice packs above Alaska. No emergency exists, a Navy spokesman said. The ships, from the Military Sea Transportation Service, are part of a 123-vessel fleet carry ing 500,000 tons of supplies and equipment to the new Arctic radar station line and other out posts. The Navy describes the operation as the greatest assault ever made on the Arctic. Reports from Point Barrow, Alaska, earlier today said some of the ships might have to be abandoned. But the Navy de nied this. 'Routine' Operation The Navy said ships in the cargo ' fleet become trapped in the ice periodically and are freed again. It described this as a "routine" part of the operation. The Navy said the only dam age has been bent rudders and propellers and damaged hulls. Such damage, it said, is expected in the battle with the ice. Re pair ships and Navy frog men are with the vessels for. on the spot repairs. . . Reports from Point Barrow said ice breakers have been called to slash a route through the ice packs. The Navy m San Francisco revealed that Rear Adm. How ard L. Collins, Pacific sector head of Military Air Sea Trans portation service, has flown to the Far North to direct opera tions. Supply Radar Stations Collins is in charge of Opera tion 572, of. which the trapped ships are a part :The operation was described by" the Navy as "the largest supply and tactical operation since Korea, involv ing a fleet ot more xnan iuu vessels. The ships supply the chain of radar stations in Northern Can ada and Alaska, known in the Navy as "Dewline. Ice breakers have been called in to slash an escape route for ships which may still be saved, sources here said. Some of the ships are now being towed to safety through narrow leads of ice after tneir propellers were damaged by contact with the drifting ice, it was reported. Almost half a million tons of equipment for the Far North ra dar outposts has already been unloaded from the armada of supply ships which arrived in the Arctic last month. Ice Conditions Bad The Navy said the ice condi tions were worse than had been expected because the Arctic ice pack had failed to recede as it usually does for a few weeks in late summer ' from ; the north coastal areas of Alaska. It said perverse winds .this year had pushed the ice pack back and forth. The Navy said the ships in its giant supply operation, which began in July, had gone through uncharted waters never be fore visited by anything larger than an Eskimo kayak. It said the ships moved through the Arctic waters with the aid of underwater demolition teams, icebreakers and hastily pre pared on-the-scene charts. The layer of hot air which hovers over the city and holds smoke and fog at the sidewalk level long has been a metero logical puzzle and is considered the key to the smog problem which has repeatedly plagued the southern California city. . Griswold, County "Air Pollution Control district direct or, said the committee of scient ists would start immediately to find a way to release the smog through the lid of hot air or eliminate the hot air lid. The scientists will use 4800 captive balloons in - a 1 2-week study of possible ways to dis perse the inversion cover. Griswold announced the scien tific study in the wake of yester day's dense pall of eye-stinging smog which forced the APCD to call its second straight prelim inary alert. The APCD forecast another heavy smog attack for today, plus a probable third consecu tive first level alert. The ozone content, the meas uring stick for the amount of pollutants in the air, reached .64 in downtown Los Angeles yesterday. The first stage alert is sounded when the ozone con centration reaches .50.....;..,.., . Recipient of Birthday Card Unappreciathe Dearborn, Mich. U.R) M. O. Nickon, long-time friend of Mayor Orville Hubbard, who re- centlv broke with the mayor. said he didn't appreciate a birth day card he received from Hub bard on Wednesday. "I paid $10 for a big box of those cards last February so the mayor could send them out to pick up votes," Nickon said "Now I get one of my own cards." Russians Fear Communist China, Bishop Sheen Says Detroit (U.R) The Rus sians are wooing the West be cause they fear the growing pow er of Communist China, Bishop Fulton J. Sheen said here last night. Speaking at the opening of the 22nd season of the Christ ian Culture series, Sheen said there have been several changes in Russia since the death of Jo seph Stalin and most of them were due to an increasing fear of their most powerful ally, or fear of themselves. The well-known priest, who has a regular television program, predicted an eventual revolt among Russian leaders because of a weakness in the Commun ist party philosophy since. Sta lin's death. "There is no dictator in Rus sia today," he said. "The col lective authority now ruling Russia is not common to Com munism, it is coexistence among the Russian leaders and can not endure." Collective Ruling Power The current ruling power of Russia is collective because all Russian leaders fear each other, he said. Their fear is stirred by the fact 134 of 182 Russian cab inet members, marshals and party secretaries have been kill ed in purges and party revolu tions since 1917. This weakness and others that have developed since the death of Stalin have led the Russian leaders to fear that the leader ship of international Commun ism may be. taken away from them by the "trigger-happy Mao Tse Tung," he said. "The Russians fear Commun ist China more than any other nation in the world," he said We may not hear anything of this for years but it is influenc ing those in Russia. The Com munists' current bid for peacl with the West is caused by their fear of China.'.' Librarian Faces Red Investigators Washington (U.R) Senate in vestigators' summoned a Penn sylvania librarian today for a second ' round of questioning about testimony identifying her as a Communist. .The Senate Internal Security Subcommittee called Mrs. Mary Knowles, a librarian at Plym outh Meeting, Pa. who invoked the Fifth Amendment in 1953 when questioned about testi mony by FBI undercover man Herbert Philbrick. Philbrick said he knew her as a Communist. The subcommittee was under stood to be perturbed by action of The Fund for The Republic, a group established by the Ford Foundation to focus attention on civil liberties. The fund gave the Plymouth Meeting library a $5,000 award last June for its "courage and effective defense of democratic principles" in re fusing to fire Mrs. Knowles de spite pressure by some towns people, v Mrs. Knowles was librarian at Norwood, Mass., when she testi fied in 1953. She was dismissed from that Job but was hired later by Plymouth Meeting. Mrs. Knowles was subpoenaed to tes tify last July, but Congress was in its closing days then and no senator showed up . to conduct the hearing.' i.
