e SIX MEDFORD (OXECON MAIL TRIBUNE Wednesday. September 14, 1955 Medford Library's Open Hours Will ' Change on Monday . On Monday, Sept. 19, open hours of the Medford Public li brary will, be changed. The adult department will be open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Mon day through Saturday. ' The junior department . will open at noon each day except Saturday and close at S ;30 p.m. each evening except Tuesday. Saturday hours will be from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Tuesday hours will be from noon to 9 p.m. . For New Books The purpose of' the new sched ule is to put more new books into circulation as quickly as possible, according to Librarian Miss Helen Webster. More than 300 new titles are now on order, Owith shipments being received Sdaily. There are also on hand thany books that have been 'do nated to the library which will be placed on the shelves just as quickly as they can be process ed for circulation, she said. The wdrk of preparing the books for use of Jackson county readers is done by Mrs. Evelyn Graham, classifier, Mrs. Charl ene Tarvin, cataloging clerk, and Mrs. Phyllis Morse, processing. Frantic Efforts Made To Revive Dying Las Vegas Hotel Business Editor's note: One of the most amazing business phenomena of the decade has been the mushroom growth of Las Vegas into the fam bling capital of the world. Among the Married - Twin beds or a double bed? Which is better for the married? Dr. Marie Stopes, author of 'Married Love," does not favor either. She is for separate rooms. The wife, says Doctor . Marie, should have a room of her own, equipped with a double bed. This room should be a spacious place, beautifully furnished and having "a romantic atmos phere." The husband's room I gather should be slightly small er, but Doctor Stopes does not go- into details as to that. In addition to aiding the romantic aspect of the marriage, separate rooms, says she, will enable the couple to sleep better. That seems a reasonable belief, es pecially when a wife snores. He is one .of those unusual executives whose train ing and, experience is such that' he is capable- of handling per sonally any job in the organiza tion he manages. This, in addi tion to all the office jobs, includes all those in the hotel kitchen. Come to think of it I may have to make an exception. 1 can't say definitely whether Mr. wangeman could in an emergency take over the job of bartender in the hotel cafe, but I. wouldn't be surprised if he could. Construction Starts On Office Building A two-story -office building is being constructed at 11th st. and Central ave. for,M. M. Huggins, General Petroleum distributor. Cost of the structure has been announced as $100,000. The building will be of New Orleans style architecture, the only one of this type in southern Oregon. It will have an area of 6,200 square feet. Features of the building will include "refrigerated ' air condi tioning, with a combination air and hot water heat. The exterior of the building will be of ma sonry construction of a special type of pumice block. ' Each of the downstairs of fices will have individual doors, and a paved parking lot is plan ned adjoining the building. T. J. Hight will be agent for the build ing. The Dunes Hotel never got off the ground following its first opening six months ago. The Sands Hotel was asked to take over The Dunes on a lease at SI, 250,000 a year, and last week end, "The Sands married The Dunes," as the ads said. The flashy premiere the most colorful and also most weird Las Vegas has seen is indicative of the change in Las Vegas. The Dunes is not the only new hotel that has failed to rake in" those expected millions at the gaming tables. The seven-story, lush Riviera had to be taken over by a group that formerly ran the - successful Flamingo. And that group already has ask ed The Sands to take the Riviera off its hands. The Royal Nevada not only has changed owners once, but the new handlers already have tried in vain to lease the hoteH to the veteran Desert Inn. The inter-racial Moulin Rouge also had to bring in new capital and has hired veteran showman Gene Mann to hypo up the shows. The hoopla re-opening of The Dunes marked the first round in a battle to get Las- Vegas out of a recession that has hit some of the expensive hotels on the suburban "strip," which is coun ty territory outside the city proper. With Frank Sinatra, one of the owners, as the headliner of the show, The Dunes had a busy casino at its "reopening" for the first time since it was built. .' ' How to revive a dying hotel Sands' press agents drew up a 200-page book of instructions and plans for the re-opening of The Dunes, and I managed to steal a look at this fascinating document. It included such sug gestions . as the construction of a 14-foot long Alladin's lamp on the lawn of the. hotel. "People can write wishes on cards and place them in the lamp," the publicity : manual said. "This will add a -touch of the Far East, and, besides, we'll get a mailing list for the hotel." : The Sands-Dunes previous publicity feat' was staging the Dick Haymes-Rita Hayworth wedding. The re-tread job on The , Dunes, observers figure, may last longer. Charging Horses Visiting press and-stars invited is an interesting process. The to The Dunes were escorted off the plane by a row of harem tinue as the lushest resort town' girls and two Negroes, listed on the program as "nubian eu nuchs," waving long fans. The ceremonies featured Sinatra on his lurching camel, three white Arabian horses charging through a canopy of speers, Arabian cos tumes for all the native mu sicians (local 807) playing orien tal music beneath an Arabian tent. A true Arab would have wilt ed in his burnoose to see it. But the event was the opening of a i drive by Las Vegas to woo back its once-booming business. What is happening to the oth er hotels in Las Vegas. Is the land of cactus and roulette wheels fizzling into the most ex pensive ghost town in history?
