Scienea Editor New York (U.R) The first prolonged and complete scien tific study of how poisonous the hydrocarbon insecticides are to birds has shown they are very poisonous, indeed For instance, only 0.0005 per cent of aldrin in the daily diet of quails will kill every bird within 42 days. Increase the daily amount to 0.50 per cent and you get 100 per cent mor tality in four days. Aldrin is a chemical relative of DDT, which is considerably ltM toxic for birds as well as for insects. In quails, the addi tion of 0.020 per cent of DDT to the daily diet resulted in only a 10 per cent morality in 154 days. But increase .the amount by only 0.005 per cent from 0.020 to 0.025 and there is 100 per cent mortality . within 45 days. The study was made by James B. DeWitt of the Fish and Wild life Service of the U. S. Depart ment of the Interior and pub lished in a technical journal of the American Chemical. Society. OPEN SWITCH BLAMED Klagenfurt, Austria U.R) Railroad officials today blamed an open switch for the collision of a passenger train and a freight train which killed eight persons and injured 35 others. Officials said a track worker pulled the wrong switch and shifted the passenger train onto a siding where it smashed into the rear of the freight train Sunday night Pheasants stood up better to the insecticides than quails. I also had an entourage of two make-up men, two hairdressers, a chauffeur, a wrangler for the horse, a wardrobe woman, two publicists, a photographer: and the beautiful Miss O'Hara to give advice. Body Make-Up First came three hours in a hot make-up department. "We have to cover the bags under your eyes . . . and your face is too wide." Then came body make-up, all over. It itched. Next it took two. hairdressers and 42 hairpins jammed into my scalp to nail down the four pound, $2,750 wig Maureen wore in the picture. Miss O'Hara, I must reveal, wore something besides that heavy wig. In the long shots she had on the ? scrawniest pair of long winter underwear ever made. "That was to avoid the lines that would show from a bathing suit," the movie queen explain ed. "But in the closeups the long . underwear photographed different from my skin and didn't look real. So we had to shoot ' most" of " the scene over again." , I suffered in the long woolies but gave up in favor of the half bikini she finally wore. It con sisted of flesh-colored brief panties and two falsie-type ob jects attached with glue (glue!). Hoisted Aboard We all trooped to the steam ing outdoor set of Coventry. The hair blew in my face. Flies were abundant. It took two men with strong leverage to hoist me aboard that horse, side-saddle. The saddle kept slipping and off for the nearby freeway. Their eggs were less hatchable than the eggs of other quails, and fewer of their chicks were able to survive quail in fancy. Show Extreme Nervousness . Within two hours after eating food containing 0.50 per cent of endrin, adult quails began show ing extreme nervousness, severe tremors, and lack of coordina tion and all were dead within 48 hours. At the other extreme, 0.0001 per Cent endrin in the daily diet produced no sign of illness in other quails until the 23rd day but three days later all birds were dead. At a level of. 0.001 per cent, dieldrin produced no symptoms for 'four weeks. During this time, female birds laid as many eggs as they had before, and the same - percentage were fertile, But the hatchability of the eggs fell from 87 per - cent to less than 42 per cent. His experiments had much point because, of the continuing controversy over what effect widespread spraying of the hy drocarbon insecticides has on wild life. Insects are sickened by the insecticides birds eat the insects. And the poisons are accumulative . : they're stored in body fats, especially the liver. Previous studies had shown that continuing sprayings with DDT reduced the bird popula tion in sprayed areas. But De- Witt's was the first report on how hydrocarbons act upon two representative species of wild birds.
